Winter Weather Workouts

Staying Fit when It's Cold Outside

Cold weather can sure put a damper on your enthusiasm when you're trying to make the most of your winter workouts. However, you can avoid the worst of the cold weather by exercising right in your home - even if you're a runner or cyclist. Owning the proper equipment can turn a dreaded workout into a fun program that you actually look forward to.

For people who like to walk, jog or run to stay fit, the obvious answer is a treadmill. Treadmills come in various sizes and are priced for different budgets. But if you don't have enough room in your home for a big, bulky treadmill, you might want to consider video exercise routines. There are some that simulate the effects of walking or jogging for up to 45 minutes, with warm-ups and cool-downs before and after. Some even incorporate stretch bands or simple hand-held weights to give you a more complete winter workout.

If you ride a bicycle to stay fit, it can be difficult to get a good winter workout when you consider the cold, the slush on the streets and distracted drivers. But it isn't always sensible to get a stationary bike for your home. An indoor bicycle trainer may be an excellent investment for you in that case. Within seconds, you can convert your regular bicycle into a sturdy stationary bike that feels more comfortable and realistic than a regular stationary bike would. And you can get a good winter workout while you watch TV or listen to music.

Even when it's cold, there will be days when you'll want to get out of the house into the fresh air. In that case, it's important that you dress appropriately for the weather, but don't over dress. Remember that exercising will raise your temperature and cause perspiration. If you're dressed too warmly, you can actually overheat in the cold. Layering is very important; remember the rule of three, an inner, middle and outer layer. Use an inner layer of clothing that is tight fitting and pulls moisture away from the skin - something like polyester, Thinsulate or wool. The middle layer is for insulation - down, fleece and wool are popular. Finally, use an outer layer that will block wind and permit evaporation of moisture.

By following these tips you'll find that you can actually enjoy you winter workouts. So don't use the cold weather as an excuse for not getting your exercise - get up and get moving!
