The sculptor Charles Umlauf came to Austin in 1941 to teach at the brand new art department at the University of Texas and decided to make this little oasis his home. Over the next 40 years, he designed and sculpted many beautiful pieces which are on display at this outdoor garden and museum, located on the west side of town. A sparkling stream spanned by bridges and an arbor create a pleasant spot for a winter wedding. A glass-enclosed building can accommodate up to 40 guests for indoor affairs.
There are many fine old historic homes west of downtown Austin and many are commercially owned and available for winter weddings. The Allan House, located on San Antonio Street, is no exception. Beautiful parlors, large verandas and a beautiful courtyard are all suitable wedding venues in this spacious house, with room for 125 guests indoors or up to 300 guests using both indoor and outdoor facilities.
For an authentic Texas wedding experience, the Star Hill Ranch is just a short drive west of Austin near Hamilton Pool. This is a refurbished complex that offers an old time chapel, separate bride and groom resting areas (actual 19th century structures) and a main house and wide veranda that can accommodate any size winter wedding party. This is one of the most historically minded wedding venues in Austin.
Located at 6th Street and historic Congress Avenue (which runs right into the Capitol complex), this hotel was built in the 1800's when Austin was just getting used to being the capitol of Texas. One of the most elegant of Austin's wedding venues, the luxurious accommodations, furnishings and artwork have given the Driskill its worldwide reputation as a gracious host for winter weddings.
