Winter Weddings

Saying "I do" during the winter months? Learn how to create a romantic wedding no matter what the weather.

Even though getting married in the spring or summer seems to be most popular, it is possible to have an equally beautiful and romantic wedding in the winter months. Not only can it save money, but it may also open up venues that would not be available otherwise.

Some locations that can be considered should be cozy and welcoming. Lodges are great for destination weddings, or even quaint bed and breakfasts. Places that have fireplaces are a great addition to the feel of a winter wedding, as well any venue with a lake, or forest.

Not sure what colors to select? Choosing jewel tones like navy, burgundy, dark green are all stylish options, as well as more frosty colors like soft blues and silver. Incorporating jewel colors into the wedding can complement the season, since the bolder colors stand out against the winter whiteness.

Centerpieces can be anything from pine cones and candles, to frosted glass globes. If there is a winter theme, delicate snowflakes and ribbon can be beautiful when hanging from a reception room. Some venues also decorate for the holiday season, so keep an eye out. Having a reception room already seasonally decorated can save money and time. If you opt to buy flowers, check with the florist to see which ones are in season. Poinsettias can be simple and elegant, as well as red roses and lilies. If you are getting married in December, the use of Evergreen garlands with holly or other red berries can be very festive.

The dinner menu can be whatever is desired, but some fun ways of changing the common catering menu is to give the caterer family recipes or other family dining alternatives. The use of scented candles like cinnamon apple or any other baking scent can also bring warmth to the reception. Giving wedding favors like snow globes or engraved Christmas ornaments is a possibility, or anything else that can comfort like teas or cocoas.

Depending on how much winter you want to involve with your wedding, some great destinations for a Honeymoon are Colorado, New England, Canada or even Europe. Many hotels throughout the U.S. offer getaway packages that can enhance your winter theme, and provide accommodations, spa treatments, and excursions. Getting married in the winter months can be hectic though for traveling, since it's a popular time during the holidays. Schedule your trips far in advance, and even be prepared for long lines.
