Winter Workout Wear for Women

What Should I Wear when I Workout?

Erin
What should I wear to workout? This is probably the first question you asked yourself as the season started to turn cold. Perhaps you are planning to start your exercise routine January 1st as a part of your New Year's resolution and just aren't sure what to wear. I can help you with that. I have my masters degree in kinesiology and I workout avidly. The tips I suggest below are based on my own experiences with what products are necessary, functional, and comfortable. There are many gimmicky products out there that you just don't need, so let me help you pick some great gear!

The product that I never exercise without is my champion running jacket from target (www.target.com). This jacket is waterproof and windproof. This jacket is also equipped with many pockets. These pockets are great for securing your keys, phone, sunglasses, etc. There are two pockets inside the jacket. One of these pockets zips closed and is very large. The other pocket doesn't zip, but is still very secure. The jacket also has two additional outer pockets which don't zip. Another great feature of this jacket is the hood. In addition to the hood there is a pullout of fabric that protects your neck from wind. Not only is this jacket functional and warm, but it is very stylish. Typically it comes in black with a slim-lined waist and flare out at the bottom.

Another product that I wear when doing any particularly vigorous workout are my women's expert shorts by cwx (www.cwx.com). These shorts are a wicking layer of clothing. This means that these lycra shorts wick sweat away from your body to keep you dry and help cool your body. These also help to stabilize your hip flexors, quadriceps, and IT band. Lastly they help with lower body circulation to allow you to workout longer and more efficiently. Cwx shorts can be worn underneath another layer of clothing or as a single layer. I normally wear these shorts under another layer both for warmth, and because these shorts are lycra so they are tight fitting.

Two very generic products that are essential for outside workouts are gloves, warm socks, and a product to cover your ears. Frostbite is more common in the extremities, so you want to make sure that these areas are kept as warm as possible. There are no specific brands of these products that I use, but these are essential.

An essential to any successful workout is a pair of shoes suited to your activity. Make sure that if you plan on running that you have a shoe designed for running, the same goes for any other activity. Also, make sure that your shoes are comfortable and that the tread is not worn. The brand of shoe that I wear are New balance with Abzorb soles. These are wonderful for runners as the abzorb soles lessen the stress on your feet and knees when pounding against the ground (www.newbalance.com).

I hope that these tips are helpful to you this winter season. But, most importantly I hope that these products make you feel so comfortable during your workout that you continue to exercise throughout your life.
