Winter Yard Sale Tips

Sophie Spyrou

Summer yard sales are popular. Drive around and you will have the choice of many different yard sales from householders who are keen to downsize and make some extra cash. But come wintertime, yard sales are few and far between. If you plan on hosting a winter yard sale, you will need to do all you can to draw people in.

Pick Your Day Carefully

Winter yard sales can be hard to pull off, especially when the weather is bitterly cold the day you plan to host the yard sale. The main reason is that many people would rather be tucked up indoors under their Snuggie or fleece blankets than they would bargain shopping at local yard sales.

Keep a close watch on weather forecasts and try to pick a day when there are no blizzards or ice storms forecast. A cold, calm winter's day is more likely to attract customers than a day when severe weather is forecast.

Offer Hot Drinks
and Snacks

Hot drinks such as cocoa, hot chocolate or apple cider are just the ticket when you are out and about, can barely feel your extremities and your face is frozen from the cold, biting wind. A good way to draw customers in is to set up a hot drink and snacks stall.

Be sure to mention on posters and in advertisements that you will be having drink and snack stall at the yard sale. That way, even if customers do not buy any housewares or clothes, you can still make money from people who stop by and purchase hot drinks and snacks for themselves or for their children.

Offer Protection from the Elements

A space heater or a marquee set up outside your home can offer a measure of protection and warmth to customers who have come out to brave the elements. If the weather suddenly turns, customers will still be protected, as will your household goods. That is why it is worth considering the benefits of turning on a space heater and setting up a marquee. It will take a little extra time and planning, but it will be worth it.

Hosting a winter yard sale can be hard, but it is still possible to draw in the crowds if you plan well in advance. Start off by picking your day carefully and then offering hot drinks and snacks to customers. Offering protection from the elements can protect customers and also keep your household items in good condition from the harsh winter elements.
