Winterizing Your Garden for a More Productive Spring Garden

Goodnatured
When we think about Old Man Winter knocking on the door, we think about the cold weather coming. We do several things to our homes and vehicles to get ready for those few months of cold weather, such as adding anti-freeze to the car and ensuring our windows and doors are weather stripped in the house. Then Old Man Winter leaves, and we are well on our way to our spring cleaning project to open the windows and air it all out.

Here are some other winterizing projects that will make your life a little easier when the birds start chirping in the spring.

When you think about winter, you probably don't think about your garden. However, there is some preparation that can be done now while it is cool to make you life a little easier in the spring and the timing is right because you can save a few bucks in the process.

You will want to pull all vegetation from the previous year and weed it as you normally would. You want a blank slate so to speak to work with. After this task is finished run your tiller through it to loosen up the soil, you are more or less acting as if you are preparing the garden for planting. Once you have that all done, through down your choice of fertilizer, manure or anything else that you use to enhance the quality of your vegetables when normal planting time comes about. Cover the entire area for winter and when spring arrives you are one step ahead of the game.

We do this so that we don't have to store the products over winter, they are in the ground, just a little earlier than normal. We save a ton of money because these products go on sale so that the stores don't have to stock them through out the winter months also. We also find that it is more enjoyable to do it in the cooler season than in the spring when there is greater chance of days of rain showers or warmer weather. When you are tearing out the old plants, you are loosening up the soil anyway, just makes sense to do it now while it is easier to do.

So if you garden, these tips should be quite helpful, we do it each year and the only thing left to do is to make it safely through winter and wait on spring to purchase new plants to start the season over again. Goodluck and happy gardening.
