Snowshoeing and Backcountry Skiing
If you're looking to strap on the boards (or strap on snowshoes) try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing with the Rocky Mountaineers. These folks ski and snowshoe up mountains and through February and into March they're planning on excursions up St. Mary's Peak, Trapper's Peak, Mount Haggin and Bass Peak. Sounds too adventurous? They also have an easy trek Saturday, February 27, 2010 on groomed Chief Joseph Cross Country Ski trails east of Lost Trail Pass. Visit The Rocky Mountaineers for further information.
Sled Dog Races
What better way to spend a few days than watching (or better yet, competing in) a sled dog race? Montana hosts some of the most exciting sled dog races and several of them are in our backyard.
Race to the Sky
Watch the biggest Montana race, the Race to the Sky, which runs February 12-17, 2010. It's celebrating its 25th year as a sled dog race. The race starts at Camp Rimini War Dog Training and Reception Center near Helena, Montana and runs 350 miles, restarting around Lincoln and heads up to Owl Creek and back. It runs over mountainous terrain and some of the highest altitudes of any sled dog race. For more information visit the Race to the Sky website for further information.
Darby Dog Derby
The Darby Dog Derby is being held February 26-28, 2010 and features 43 mile, 26 mile and 14 mile races plus sprint races. Check out the Montana Mountain Mushers website for further information.
