A wireless controller comes with the Xbox 360, but you may have a need for a second controller so that you can play two player games. It is well worth the extra $10 over the cost of a wired controller to splurge and go for the wireless one.
The batteries last an extremely long time. I have played for well over thirty hours on the first set of batteries that came with the controller and haven't had to replace them yet. That includes playing with the rumble turned on for one of my games because I can't find a way to turn it off. If you are worried about replacing batteries, you might consider rechargeable batteries. Unless you play many hours everyday you shouldn't have to replace the batteries in the controller very often. A great feature of the controller is that it turns itself off when you turn off the console or when you haven't touched it in a set amount of time. This means that you can never leave it on by accident and run down the batteries.
Also, the wireless controller is great, because there are no cords to trip over, so when your dog goes running in front of you because he hears something outside, you don't have to worry about your very expensive Xbox 360 getting dragged off of the table. The range is also good enough that you can play from a good distance from the television, so you don't have to sit right up on the TV to keep the signal. And the greatest thing about having no wire is that I find it easier on my hands. The weight of the wire, although small, can really wear on your hands after a little while. It seems that this wireless controller is much better balanced, than one with a cord coming out of it.
Your friends will enjoy being able to sit wherever they want to in the room and will not be limited by a short cord. In addition to happy friends, you will find that you have much less clutter without multiple cords getting tangled up and creating a big mess. There's nothing more frustrating than having to pry apart a hopelessly tangled pile of controllers every time you want to play a game.
If you still aren't so sure about a wireless controller for your Xbox 360 because of the price, you can buy them at a discount on Amazon.com. As of today, they are the same price as you would pay for a wired controller at your local retailer. The only negative thing about the wireless controller for the Xbox 360 is that I'll never want to play with anything else again.
