Wisconsin and Boston College Face Off in Hockey Title Game

Darren Pare
On Saturday night the NCAA will put the finishing touches on another successful college hockey season. In the finale the Boston College Eagles will go up against the Wisconsin Badgers. Both teams reached the finals after impressive wins in the semi finals. Wisconsin took out RIT 8-1, while later on Thursday, BC routed Miami of Ohio 7-1.

Saturday's championship game should be a high powered offensive show. Wisconsin had four of the top twenty scoring leaders in the country, while BC had two. Both teams also have a sniper who scored 28 goals on the season, Wisconsin has Blake Geoffrian, while BC counters with Cam Atkinson. Both teams also have seasoned head coaches that have been in this position before, Wisconsin's Mike Eaves and BC's Jerry York. In fact these teams match up pretty well with one another and that should make for a good game on Saturday.

The one difference I see between the teams is goal tending. Wisconsin's Scott Gudmandson has been pretty solid all season and post season long. On the other hand BC's John Muse has been good at times, but has also struggled at times. He allowed 7 goals to Yale in the regional finals and he also let in six against Maine in the Hockey East Finals. With Wisconsin's high flying offense this could be a real problem for the Eagles.

Prediction: I see the game being close throughout most of the contest with Wisconsin sealing the victory with a late empty net goal. Wisconsin wins 7-5.

Extras: Wisconsin will be looking to win it's seventh hockey title, Boston College it's fourth.

This game is more than just Wisconsin versus Boston College, it is just the latest battle in West versus East. If you go on any college hockey site you can see the debate rage on. It isn't quite to the extent of Red Sox versus Yankees yet, but it is getting there.
