Wisconsin Farm Grows Vegetables with Florida Sea Water

Rik Rodriguez
Now many of us may laugh at the title of this article. Some will say that if you feed any plant pure sea water the plant will surely die. Upon casual observation we know this could not be true because we observe plants growing on the oceans edge all the time. In brackish water or in pure sea water many plants have adapted to grow directly in and around ocean water. We also often see all types and species of wild plant life and domesticated plants growing near the ocean where these plants are exposed to the ocean mist. As I stated we can observe this casually all around the world. Plants growing along the sea shore. To me this serves as adequate scientific proof that plants can and do grow in some sort of sea water condition.

Why would anyone want to grow plants in ocean water? Some of us have become aware that the food we are eating is empty. Yes void of nutrition, grown with harsh chemicals, pesticides and genetically altered. But in an attempt to grow food with nutritional content their have been many people who have attempted this.I will reference a few that experimented with Sea water. Maynard Murray wrote the book Sea Energy Agriculture in 1976 which proved that produce could be grown in sea water. He built a Hydroponic farm to test his theories in Florida. Although it did not prove that food grown in sea water had superior nutritional content.

Don Jansen bought Murrays Farm and continued growing produce Hydroponically in diluted sea water for years. While Jansens work was not taken seriously by the mainstream agriculture community. The alternative agricultural communities grasped Murrays and Jansens main concept of giving the plant inorganic nutrients in which the plant added a carbon atom through photosynthesis. Therefore making all the elements that were given the plant available for humans to readily use them.

A scientist in Wisconsin Kevin Kuene started growing wheat grass using sea water. He now bottles the product and sells the only wheat grass grown in diluted sea water. His business is called Grow Greens. He shared the method with the surrounding community.Kevins parents own a farm in Seymour that uses sea water on a large scale. Kevin also owns a farm in Wisconsin that grows specialty crops.Kevin is known around the world for his progressive agriculture work in several areas including specialty micro crop management, growing nutritious food and growing editable plants with sea water to name a few.

I had the pleasure of visiting the farm in Seymour, Wisconsin that is using sea water to grow its produce. Which happens to be the parents of Kevin Kuene. They use mostly conventional organic methods to grow exceptional produce! But the addition of sea water has really paid off! We visited in late Oct after a pretty hard frost. Strawberries were not effected by the frost. We were surprised. They were in an open field no protection from the elements. We picked and ate several quarts each. By far the best strawberries I have ever had. Literally none of the produce had been destroyed by the frost. Odd because he grows mostly heirlooms varieties which are more tend to be sensitive to light frosts.

The food grown in diluted sea water tastes better than any produce I have ever had in my life. Sweet juicy and satisfying ! WHY? Did I mention that sea water is very similar to human blood. Yes same mineral content and salinity. Hmmmm?

Better hydroponics : 16% sea water, 84% fresh water,
Be sure that the chloride and suphure are removed. Good luck !

Great article, this sea energy agriculture is the single most profound information I have ever come across in 25 years, in regards to improving the health of mankind.

Please inform me of the dilution needed for growing vegetables with sea water.
One part sea water to what part fresh water. Thank you from Maah! in Fiji
