Wisconsin Teen Charged with Trying to Poison Her Pregnant Stepmother

14-year Old Chyanne Otto Facing First-degree Attempted Homicide Charges

Linda Ann Nickerson
Cinderella, she's not. But this little princess has stepmothers everywhere watching their steps.

Chyanne N. Otto, a 14-year-old from Suring, Wisconsin, has been charged with felony attempted first-degree intentional homicide in Oconto County. The teen is accused of trying to poison her pregnant stepmother, Dawn Otto, back in May 2010.

Parents of classmates of Chyanne Otto told local law enforcement officers that the girl bragged about trying to kill her stepmother.

Based on an anonymous tip, Oconto County police confiscated Chyanne Otto's personal journal, which included an entry saying this: "Dawn won't die. I gave her a bunch of junk of stuff out of the garage last week, and she is not dead, so I am doing it again with only antifreeze, so hopefully it works."

The chilling journal entry was not dated.

Dawn Otto has said that she wondered why her PowerAde sports drink had tasted odd, but she indicated that she had never actually become ill. The stepmother recounted how she had called her husband, Chyanne Otto's father, to ask if he had reused the PowerAde bottle for chemicals.

Some time later, a parent of one of Chyanne Otto's friends contacted Dawn Otto to let her know that the teen had talked about poisoning her. The Ottos searched the 14-year-old's room in their home and discovered the journal in which the girl had penned her intimidating and incriminating entries.

According to classmates, Chyanne Otto has talked about killing her stepmother for close to a year. In a journal entry dated May 2010, the Wisconsin stepdaughter apparently wrote: "I so want to kill Dawn, but she is pregnant. So I am going to kill her and the baby or just her and wait until October."

As the investigation has unfolded, Oconto County police have discovered that Chyanne Otto supposedly spoke to her therapist about her desire to poison her stepmother. The counselor, however, did not speak up, perhaps concerned about client confidentiality.

Chyanne Otto's case was filed in adult court in Oconto County, Wisconsin, based on an official criminal complaint. Her initial appearance took place on January 11th. Because she is a juvenile, the 14-year-old was released on a $50,000 signature bond to her own grandfather, pending a January 26th hearing. In the meantime, Chyanne Otto is legally barred from any contact with her stepmother, Dawn Otto.

Classified as a felony, attempted first-degree intentional homicide can carry a prison term of up to 60 years in Wisconsin.

Wicked and not-so-wicked stepmothers everywhere are wondering.

Chyanne Otto's alleged foiled attempt to poison her stepmother may make stepparents everywhere think twice before they leave open beverages around their homes. The Wisconsin teen's recipe for mixed drinks in a blended family may give stepparents pause everywhere. What toxic concoctions might await others?

Stepparents may find themselves locking bedroom doors and checking automotive brakes more often.

"Hey, this drink smells a little funny. Wanna taste it?"

Chilling. That girl might need more than a therapist or jail time.

The counselor should have spoken up but I agree it's gonna be a difficult case

This is bound to be a very complcated case - teenager who already has a counselor, death threats & plans written in a journal, acting out the fantasy, step-parent & unborn baby targets of unharnessed rage. There is not going to be any real winners here....

    Wow, that is just unbelieveable.

I agree that confidentiality should be broken when serious crimes are being committed. This is just heinous.

I'm afraid this speaks less to 'step-parent' relations and more directly to the corruption of our youth.

Yes, the counselor should have spoken up and not worried about confidentiality.
