Wisconsin's Trevon Hughes, Future NBA Star?

Before running into Stephen Curry and a hot Davidson team in the NCAA tournament, the Wisconsin Badgers were enjoying a spectacular 2008 season, running up a 31-6 record in the process. Part of the team's success could be attributed to super sophomore Trevon Hughes.

While that fact might be lost on anyone who saw Hughes all but disappear from the court in the Davidson game, a game in which he played 12 lackluster minutes that did not yield a single point, his sparkling performance against Kansas State the game before should have left little doubt. In a 36 minute effort that game, Trevon used his phenomenal outside shooting to hit on 4 out of 9 three-point shots, to score a game high 25 points against a Kansas State team that was headed by heralded freshman Michael Beasley. Not to be seen as a one dimensional player Hughes added three assists and a steal in the contest, leading Wisconsin to a decisive 72-55 victory.

Despite the subsequent lose to Davidson, Hughes second season at Wisconsin was marked by a quantum leap in performance, as the Queens New York native improved statistically across the board. After averaging just 1.4 points a game in only 7.7 minutes of play, Hughes finished second on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) to Brain Butch in 2008. In doing so, he has begun to live up to the expectations that made the 6-1 Guard a four-star high school recruit in 2006. Always known for a tough, hard nose style of play, Hughes has improved both his perimeter game and defense this year, making him a more complete all-around player; though those that have followed his career since his days at Delafield St. John's Military Academy in Wisconsin, have known for a while that this Badger sophomore has a sky high ceiling when it comes to his talent and potential. In high school, a typical game for Hughes would include 20 points and 10 assists, numbers that made him a top 100 recruit on most national scouting boards.

Choosing to stay in his home state, despite being courted by teams from the Big Ten as well as the Atlantic Coast, Hughes should continue to improve his game for Wisconsin in seasons to come. With a little luck, this emerging star may find himself on an NBA roster some day.
