Wish You Were Then

Welcome to Elgin Park

Michele Starkey
It was a story that went viral just about one year ago. The tiny town of Elgin Park that doesn't exist on any map and the only way to actually get there is to take a look at the creations of Michael Paul Smith, close your eyes and remember when...

You have to watch the video on Youtube to appreciate the work of Michael Paul Smith.

You can view it here.

There are just fifteen buildings and over three hundred miniature cars. You see, Elgin Park is 300 pictures and transported over 25,000,000 visitors to a place that only exists in Michael's memories. He created the tiny town with his digital camera and his 1/24 scale model cars and homemade buildings.

The realistic photos have everything that you could ever imagine except the people. Michael said he purposely left the people out so that you could picture yourself in a simpler time. Some folks have even downloaded the photos and photo shopped themselves into the pictures, dressed in vintage clothing of course. You can view them on Flickr from Yahoo! here.

Just viewing the photos gives you the feeling that you have been transported back in time, back to the 1940's or 1950's. The detailing and models are incredible and so realistic that Michael receives hundreds of emails from all over the world asking for directions to Elgin Park. Of course, when he reveals that it doesn't exist, he rarely hears from the same person again.

Why does he do it? Simply because Michael Paul Smith considers himself as a preserver of past things, simpler times and little American towns. "I'm a one man historian."

Mr. Smith will be publishing his photo book in May of this year called, "Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town."

We all need to be transported back every now and again. Enjoy your "Remember When..." journey and Michael's artistry.
