Wishes Fulfilled

Be Careful What You Wish For

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

I wish I hadn't wished it
But after I wished it
It was too late
To cancel it or take it back;
When I wished it,
I believed it would be great.

But that was then and
This is now
With only moments in between;
Just long enough to realize
The things I should have seen
Before I performed
Psychological alchemy
And created a situation
That did not warrant
Basic existence
Let alone any deliberate
Celebration.

Wishing can have a
Hair trigger
And that's a risk
In and of itself;
There are thoughts that pass
And are better left to die
A silent death
On a dark, dusty basement shelf.

Hindsight is so accurate,
We realize we were wrong,
But often that knowing
Comes too late
For most of us
In the throng.

Now I think I know it
And will not do it again,
But I know myself too well
To believe that;
The next time won't be if,
It will be when.

    David, you write so many incisive poems that start out that way, but just go on too long. I think a very important concept of poetry is to make the reader exercise his imagination a bit, and, when you dot every last i and cross every t, you deprive the reader of that satisfactoey exercise. Please do not take this as hate mail If you had stopped at "the things I should have seen," you would have made your point a lot more artfully.

    I know myself well enough to know that I, too, will have a "when" rather than an "if", not matter how hard I try. Well done, David!
