Witchcraft, Fortunetelling and Astrology

What the Bible Has to Say About These Things

Many of us would like to know what the Bible has to say about astrology and palm readers. I can tell you from what I have read that it is not something that God approves of. Below I am going to give you some scriptures from the Bible that talks about this.

In the book of Acts 16:16-18 it talks about a girl that had a spirit of divination. This girl was a slave and her owners would use her to do fortune telling. They made a lot of money off of her. It says that she was possessed. This is a key word because she was possessed with a spirit. We have to decide at this point whether the spirit is a good spirit or a bad spirit. The Bible will tell us about this. Verse 18 of this chapter tells us that Paul was annoyed with her because she would follow them every day and repeat the same phrase. She was telling people that they were servants of God and that they had come to tell how to be saved. Paul tells the spirit to come out of her and it left it that minute. If it was a good spirit why would Paul want it to leave? Besides the point as Christians we do not believe that we can be possessed with good spirits. The only spirit that we have is the Holy Spirit. So in essence what I am saying is that this woman had a bad spirit. It was an evil spirit. From this scripture we can surmise that divination is not something that God is thrilled with. The following scriptures tell us that there are evil spirits. These scriptures are Ephesians 6:12, Matthew 24:24, and Mark 51-20. These spirits want to attack us.

The book of Deuteronomy is an excellent book of the Bible to find information on this subject. Commandments were being given here to the people. The people were being instructed on how God wanted them to live. In Deuteronomy 18:10 we see that it tells the people that they were not to pass people through fire, use divination, an observer of time, watcher of stars, an enchanter, or a witch. It goes on in verse 11 to name charmers, those who consult with familiar spirits, wizards, or necromancer. The people are told that these things are an abomination to God. Abominations are things that God greatly abhors.

The Bible tells us that there are consequences to people who are involved with this sort of thing. God wanted the people to be put to death who exercised these things. We can read further down in Deuteronomy chapter 18 where it talks about those who tell people that "God said this and God said that". God told the people to watch out for those types of people. If the things did not come true then it was not of God. God said that those people who did not speak from him were going to die. This tells you how important this is to God. He abhors the lies. God was telling the people to be different from the other nations that were around them. The other nations were practicing these things. God wants us to be different from everyone else who is doing this very thing. He doesn't want us to have anything to do with it. All of this comes from Deuteronomy chapter 18.
