With Angels, Another Weepy Performance by David Archuleta

Amy Cox
I can imagine that when David Archuleta found out that this week, he was to sing songs of inspiration, he was ecstatic. After all, that's what he does every week, and now it was actually going to be warranted. He would be allowed to sing a heavy hitting ballad about the common plight of Americans without receiving any flack from the judges. Little David must have been beside himself with excitement.

One would expect inspirational night to be his night. With his open eyed innocence and the ability to draw what is close to tears in his eyes while he sings, he should have hit one out of the park last night.

I watched as little David sat in front of the piano and keyed the first few notes of the song. He was going to sing "Angels," yet another slow song with a message to drive home. But on inspirational night, that was okay.

Or was it?

His lower register was weak to the point that he sounded like a teenager going through puberty. His voice shook and squeaked on any note that was low. He gave the camera that same somewhat goofy, earnest look that he reserves for every performance.

And for some reason, the crowd (and the judges) loved him.

I don't get David Archuleta. To me, it seems as though he wants to heal the world through karaoke, and he's young enough to believe that he can. His voice can shake and miss notes, but because of his message and his youth, he gets a free pass. It was yet another performance that was just okay, but for some reason, he walked away with rave reviews.

While David's gimmick may work for him right now while he's on American Idol, it is not the way to ensure long lasting success. Like the song We Are the World, it had its place, it was uplifting, but it was soon brushed aside as "cheesy" and "uncool." David is going to end up in that same category.

Tess - RE: your comment about David A. not lasting and needing to change it up. Why are you so convinced that he WON'T change things up? I thought he did great with Shop Around and despite him forgetting the lyrics to We Can Work It Out, the studio version of that was nothing short of amazing. You might want to listen to a few of his more upbeat songs before drawing a conclusion. I admit David A. is not the best singer to grace this planet, but I get annoyed when people (such as the author of this article) feel the need to say he's getting a free pass because of his fanbase. I am not female and I am far from being a pre-teen. Don't stereotype his audience is all I'm saying.

    What a stupid article...

Please! "Cruel hate messages..."?! I think I'm going to be sick. Can't anybody say anything REMOTELY negative about this kid without being accused (in the most melodramatic terms possible) of CRUELTY! and HATE! and the MURDER OF ONE SMALL BOY'S HOPES AND DREAMS!? I am a singer, I studied vocal music in college, and I can tell you that the author's comments are RIGHT ON about his lower register. I do not deny that this kid has talent, but the author also makes some very good points about his longevity as an artist. He is not showing any versatility and I would venture to guess that after one CD of his MESSAGE ballads he would have little else to offer. Everyone, eventually, gets tired of the same thing and he is not doing himself any favors by singing the same song week after week. He may win AI and he may do very well, but he will not last without changing it up a bit.

One of the thousands of reasons why i like David Archuleta is that he pick songs that have great messages. He doesn't just sing songs for popularity (although luckily he is for what he's doing) or just because they are catchy. I think that shows a great deal of maturity. And even if he becomes like an inspirational singer and that it wouldn't sell that much record, so what? So long as he is singing about things that he believes in. But heck, for sure he's gonna sell millions of cds anyways.

I disagree! David Archuleta's vocal was perfect, especially when he sang the chorus of the song Angels. It gave me goosepump. I love all, the arrangement, the runs, the music, the lyrics, the message, the piano. Please, he's NO "karaoke". You have no clue about music! He's so professional at 17 years old. I will buy his album and his American idol performances on iTunes. The judges and many, many, many audiences love him. Do you think we are deaf? Nah.

    Amy,

Your article is right on. At first I enjoyed David's performances, now they seem to have all blended into a "weepy" (thanks for the adjective) cry to the world, have pity on me appeal. He is talented, but needs some intellegence in song choice to move on any further. He is truly small and weak.

Yeah you have no clue so please stop postng such insanely stupid articles!

    "another OK performance" Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!
David is amazing & has a beautiful emotion filled voice that moves people, that is why he will win AI!!!!!!!!
