With Obama Cheating Scandal Story, the National Enquirer Tries to Go Three for Three

The Supermarket Tabloid that Brought Down John Edwards and Tiger Woods Now Focuses on the President

As it reports that proof exists that President Barack Obama had and/or is having an affair with his thirty five year old aide, Vera Baker, is the National Enquirer looking to build on its 'winning streak' and bring down yet another famous and powerful man?

In years past, the National Enquirer had a reputation for reporting half truths, innuendos and outright lies. It has been the target of lawsuits in the past, but the fact is most recently, the National Enquirer has built a reputation of breaking true, if salacious and sometimes trashy, stories about celebrities and politicians.

In late 2007, the Enquirer began reporting on then Presidential hopeful John Edwards' extramarital affair with a campaign staffer of his own, Rielle Hunter. While initially denied by Edwards, the Enquirer played a key role in ultimately forcing the North Carolina senator to admit he had had an affair. The Enquirer ultimately forced Edwards to admit that he had fathered a child with Hunter. The mainstream media and establishment only covered the story when it was obvious that the Enquirer had been right all along.

Then, in November of 2009, the Enquirer broke the story that golfer Tiger Woods was having an affair with New York party girl Rachel Uchitel. While today it may be hard to recall, the idea that the squeaky clean Woods was stepping out on his wife seemed almost unfathomable at the time.

The Enquirer story on Woods is in many ways what led to his downfall, at least his downfall within the context of sponsorships and public admiration. In the ensuing days, Woods was involved in his now infamous car accident, and a flood of stories about other women came to light.

In both the Woods and Edwards scandals, the Enquirer broke stories on men with near impeccable public reputations. In both cases, the initial stories seemed difficult to believe.

One thing that is certain right now is that the Enquirer is on a roll.

As big as the stories of personal failings regarding a senator and one of the best golfer's of all time are, they would pale in comparison to a similar story involving the President of the United States.

The National Enquirer, in many ways, is putting itself on the line with its reporting of an affair between Obama and his aide Vera Baker. While the story itself does not present the 'smoking gun' that the mainstream media would presumably look for before reporting it, in many ways it follows a similar pattern of prior Enquirer stories.

The coming hours and days will tell whether or not the National Enquirer story on the alleged Barack Obama cheating scandal is credible and will survive beyond a twenty four hour news cycle. But for those hoping the Obama and Baker affair are not true, remember that the Enquirer is most often right when it comes to these things; particularly lately.

It's funny how nobody used to ever give NE stories a second glance but after these recent ones proved true, their stories get a little more attention.
