With the Passing of Elizabeth Taylor Who Could Be Set to Star in a Remake of Cleopatra

Could Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Be Set to Play Cleopatra and Mark Antony

The legendary story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony has been portrayed on film a number of times, but none compare to the 1963 version that starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

There was something special about this version of Cleopatra that made it a classic movie. Was it the star studded cast, that included other legendary names such as Rex Harrison, Martin Landau and Roddy McDowall? Was it the exotic sets, the costumes and the script? Or was it the stunning beauty of Elizabeth Taylor and the charisma that she had with future husband Richard Burton that made the movie so memorable?

The media has seen plenty of reports of potential remakes of this movie in the last couple of years, but with the passing of Elizabeth Taylor this week, a remake of this classic love story could soon become a reality.

Recent movie versions of the story have shown Cleopatra portayed in a form that is more likely to be historically correct, as a woman with power but not a woman of exquisite beauty.

Is the movie world now ready however for another Hollywood blockbuster version of the story, with a host of big names, and the roles of Cleopatra and Mark Antony being played by a pair of actors that are not only well known as well as being good looking, but who have that rare charisma together on the big screen.

If this were to become a reality, could Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt be the best choice for the roles of the fated lovers Cleopatra and Mark Antony?

One thing that Elizabeth Taylor and Angelina Jolie have in common is their beautiful eyes and stunning facial features, and Angelina ought to look perfect as an Egyptian queen, one that is gifted with both beauty and power. Angelina has rarely looked more beautiful than when she portrayed Olimpias, the mother of Alexander The Great in the 2004 movie Alexander.

Brad Pitt too plays a perfect ancient warrior, as can be seen from his portrayal of Achilles in the 2004 movie Troy.

The chemistry between the two of them was obvious to anyone who saw the movie Mr & Mrs Smith, and it's almost certain that here too the charisma added to the success of the movie.

Is it likely that we shall see a remake of the movie Cleopatra within the next five years? I do believe that almost certainly there will be a remake, but when there is, I wonder if Angelina Jolie will be chosen to play the role of Cleopatra, and indeed if she were to be selected, would her husband Brad Pitt be chosen to play alongside her as Mark Antony?

I personally think that these are good choices, but there are many fans of Elizabeth Taylor who are not fans of Angelina Jolie.

I have to ask therefore, if not Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who would you choose to play these two roles and why.

Hmm, interesting question. Even tho I think they're both good actors, I don't see Angelina and Brad in those parts. Quite frankly, I was unimpressed even with Liz in this movie. I'm not a movie goer, but I too don't think it should be remade. If they insist, however, they need someone who's NOT white, anglo saxon, that's for sure!

Good point Drew, but without going back to the history books, I wonder if Cleopatra was actually black? By this time in Egyptian history their ruling class was well intermixed with the Greeks, so it's possible that her skin was actually lighter in color.

I think they should use some one black for the flim... I love Agelina but Cleopatra was an Egyptian.

I'd hate to see a remake of Cleopatra. I liked Taylor better in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Interesting article as always, Tony.

I'm not a Jolie fan. In fact, I'm not in favor of a remake of Cleopatra.
