Plans for Brooklyn Bridge Park include building more high-rise condos "inside" of the park. The owners' fees will pay for the park's upkeep.

But there has been opposition to housing in the Park. The reasons are:

-- Condo owners' might feel they have a say about what goes on in the public's green land because they are forking out green for maintenance. The park needs to be a public, not private, place.

-- If the cost of the park's upkeep rises, more condos might be built to cover the expense. The more condos built in the park, the less open space for the public to enjoy.

So, a dilemma exists. How to pay for Brooklyn Bridge Park's upkeep without putting housing "inside" of the park?

The answer may be right in front of our eyes. If you've ever been out in NY Harbor, you've probably noticed the building with the big red "Watchtower" sign. It belongs to the Watchtower Society, aka Jehovah's Witnesses.

According to the NY Post, the Witnesses have put the Watchtower complex up for sale. It consists of 33 buildings, reports NY1 News. An activist has suggested, "The city should buy the Witnesses buildings, convert them into luxury condos and then put tax revenues from the sales toward the park's anticipated $16.1 million annual maintenance costs," reports the Post.

No word, yet, on what the Watchtower buildings may cost. But the Witnesses sold what is now One Brooklyn Bridge Park to the city for $205 million. It has 440 units, reports the Post. If sold at $1 million each, that's $440 million. However, Brooklyn 101 reports, a 3-bedroom condo sold for $4.5 million in March 2009.

So, the answer may have been all along, the Watchtower.

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile
