WNBA 2007 Season Preview: WNBA Champs

Bruce Bostwick
With the WNBA season wrapping up, there comes the question of which teams are going to go all the way to the finals. To put in even simpler, who will become the WNBA Champions? The WNBA Championship has been dominated by Western Conference teams based upon the track record, compared to the Eastern Conference finals, which has only won two times. The Detroit Shock so far is the only team to have won the WNBA Championship from that conference but the Liberty has made more appearances but in defeat.

The 1st champions of this league were the Houston Rockets, winning the 1st 4 titles in league history and so far the only team to have completed a 4-peat with their last championship coming in 2000. The next team to get a championship would be the Los Angeles Sparks, which won back-to-back titles and the last being in 2002. After the Sparks, no team has won back-to-back championships and has had a different champion each season. The Shock so far could become the next team to pull off a back-to-back championship run assuming they get through their opponents.

With only 13 teams this team, only 8 teams overall will be there but only two teams will make it straight to the finals. The odds on favorites generally speaking are the ones with the best records in the conferences respectively. At this moment, only the Shock and the Mercury hold the best records in the league. There is only one playoff spot left and it is on the Eastern Conference side of things. It is a tie between New York and Washington are buying for that final playoff spot. Without further or do, it is time to project which team will be the Conference champions and then finally who gets to be the WNBA Champions this season.

Eastern Conference

There are 5 possible teams at this very moment. New York and Washington will have below .500 records when making it to the post-season. Odds state that these two teams are unlikely to go all the way considering the fact they don't have the record of a playoff team. Most if not all have a record above .500 for a season and stand a better chance of going all the way. Connecticut has the 3rd best record but barley above .500 so the team is not likely to make it. It comes down to teams Indiana and Detroit. Both have had very good seasons this year. The Shock have been on a slide but it won't stop them from going all the way this season and meeting Indiana in the finals. The game play of these teams has actually been decent but in the end, it comes down to Detroit going back to the WNBA Finals.

Eastern Conference Champs: Detroit Shock

Western Conference

All the teams have been decided as far as who is in and who isn't. Seattle is known to have a record just at .500, which generally isn't a good sign for any playoff team in general. The chances of them making it to the finals are rather slim due to the record and simply not having enough to get the job done. Sacramento and San Antonio have done pretty good this season but it may not be enough to get the job done. Phoenix so far has been on a house of fire and have been winning games quite a bit. Based upon that, it looks to be the Phoenix Mercury to go all the way this to this championship game.

Western Conference Champs: Phoenix Mercury

WNBA Championship

Detroit and Phoenix are looking to be the teams that most likely will match up for the WNBA Finals. The key to this will be who really wants it more. Both teams have team chemistry within themselves. Detroit is coming off a championship season and will be looking to repeat and Phoenix is looking to capture their 1st title. It will come down to experience and who has put together the best team. Looking closely at it and examining it even further, it would be hard to go against The Shock on becoming WNBA Champs. They just have the edge in experience and desire to really want it to go all the way and take the title again being the only Eastern Conference team to have won back-to-back titles.

WNBA Champions: Detroit ShockThere you have it, when the season is over, most likely it'll be the NBA getting involved next. Coming up soon will be some projections as to what will happen the upcoming 2007-08 NBA Season as to who gets in, who doesn't, and projection of who will be the NBA Champions.

  • The Houston Rockets have won the 1st 4 WNBA Titles.
Detroit if they win this, could be the 1st Eastern Conference Team to win back-to-back WNBA Titles.
