Woeful Contestants Win Scottsdale Tourism's "Take Pity on Me!" Campaign

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz: The Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) invited winter sufferers from around the nation to share their winter woes in the "Take Pity on Me!" campaign with the chance to win a winter escape vacation to the city.

Asking "Who deserves our pity the most?", the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau's promotional contest posted photos and video of contestants on an interactive website. Web site visitors perused the submissions of nearly 200 contestants who boasted their ice, snow and cold-weather winter blues to blissfully unaffected Arizona residents.

The campaign was aimed at promoting Scottsdale's wonderful winter weather as the rest of the country suffered in freezing temperatures.

Nearly 5,000 Scottsdale residents voted for their favorite contestant. The winter blues winners or the "Take Pity on Me!" campaign's most pitiful were Steve Stone from Amherst, N.Y. and Alisa Blackwood of Saint Paul, Minn.

Mr. Stone's winning photo submission was of him enjoying an ice bath in his hot tub against an immense backdrop of deep snow. Ms. Blackwood's winning video submission introduced Arizonians to "snotsicles".

For his winning photo submission, Steve Stone won roundtrip airfare to Scottsdale, a three-night stay at the Hotel Valley Ho, daily breakfast at Café ZuZu, dinner for two at Tracer Vic's and golf for two at ASU Karsten Golf Course.

Alisa Blackwood's "snotsicle" video won her roundtrip airfare to Scottsdale, three-nights at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, dinner for two at Acacia, two 50-minute spa treatments, daily breakfast, two fitness classes and golf for two at Troon North Golf Club.

This year was only the second time that the promotional contest was run but the Scottsdale CVB reported a 41% increase in submissions over the previous year's contest. The organization also enjoyed nearly 65,000 page views to the Scottsdale CVB website during the contest, double the draw from last year.

The contest was promoted mostly in Chicago and New York but organizers said that entries were received from around the country. The top contest submissions came from Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York.

In a March 5 press release, the Scottsdale CVB's vice president of marketing Lauren Simons said "we are thrilled with the results of this year's contest. With growing competition and new generations of visitors discovering our destination, the CVB is always seeking innovative ways to interact with potential visitors in cold-weather destinations."

Winning contestants Steve Stone and Alisa Blackwood seem to have gotten Scottsdale's warm-weather message loud and clear. The winning photo and video can be seen at www.pleasepityme.com.
