As a woman golfer, I review golf courses for women from a woman's perspective. I've seen too many golf courses not properly set up and designed for the average woman golfer. When I find a truly woman-friendly golf course, I have to share it. I fell in love with Mr Daly's signature golf course in Myrtle Beach, Wicked Stick
Wicked Stick Golf Course is located off Highway 17 By-Pass in Myrtle Beach. My husband and I have tried to play Wicked Stick during our last visit to Myrtle Beach, but the course is very popular and difficult to get on. This trip we planned ahead and made a point to get a tee time to play Wicked Stick. I sure am glad we did.
Wicked Stick is a links-style golf course that is fairly wide open off the tee. It was quite unusual to play a golf course without fairway bunkers, especially in Myrtle Beach! Don't be fooled into thinking the whole course is easy, though. Each green is well protected with green-side bunkers, water hazards, and pot bunkers. Yes, all players can "grip it and rip it" off the tee, but you better have your short game when you play Wicked Stick.
For the women golfers, the forward tees at Wicked Stick play 4911 yards with a slope/rating of 70.1/123. The slope and rating seemed a bit high to me however, if you are having "one of those days" where it doesn't matter how woman-friendly a course is, the slope and rating are most likely right on the money. Thankfully, I was having a fairly good day off the tee and my irons cooperated most of the time.
Wicked Stick has some fairly large greens and you will notice that the #7, a par 3, has an extra large green that is shared with hole #11 in true Links style. The greens were easy enough to read and didn't have any unnecessary, tricky breaks and undulation to them.
Only one par 4 played over 300 yards from the forward tees. Hole #12 plays 344 yards. As long as the wind (which is a common factor on this Myrtle Beach golf course) is in your favor, you shouldn't have any problems. Keep in mind that although there are no bunkers on this golf hole, there is water running down the right side. Keep your tee shot to the left and hit it straight!
The majority of tee shots on Wicked Stick in Myrtle Beach are wide open with little trouble. A low score will depend on a solid short game and good putting.
The course is extremely well marked and it's rare to have to take too much effort to find out your yardage. The staff also provides a free, and very detailed, yardage book in each cart.
I also highly commend the staff at Wicked Stick. From the moment you walk in to the golf course pro shop you get that warm-welcome feeling. It was very refreshing. Everyone from the pro shop staff to the rangers were extremely helpful and friendly, which made for a very enjoyable round of golf. I put a lot of value in customer service in the golf industry and Wicked Stick's staff exceeded my expectations by far! The pro shop offered nice ladies golf merchandise and supplies, and they also offered free tees for the players. Just a note about the free tees: the tees are on the sales counter in a fish bowl. The staff is quick to offer free tees to you for your round (which I needed after the week I had at other courses in Myrtle Beach). However, don't try and do what I did! I said, "Thank you!" and jokingly tried to take the whole fish bowl. To my surprise, and the staff's amusement, the fish bowl is attached to the counter. Apparently, I wasn't the first golfer at Wicked Stick to try this!
Not only is Wicked Stick a woman-friendly golf course, it is definitely a golf course in Myrtle Beach that everyone will love to play. It is set up to accommodate golfers all playing abilities. The score card for Wicked Stick also has handicap index guidelines that help you choose which set of tees to play. As of this writing, Wicked Stick offers 5 sets of tees, with the tips being called the "Daly Tees".
Wicked Stick is (so far) my #1 Woman-Friendly golf course in Myrtle Beach. My husband and I intend to make Wicked Staff a permanent round each time we visit the Myrtle Beach area. With all the golf courses to choose from in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this is quite a statement from me. There are very few golf courses that I make a point to play each time I am in Myrtle Beach and Wicked Stick is now on that list.
