Woman Sentenced for Giving Birth Under Fake Name

Woman Uses Alias to Give Birth

An Oklahoma woman that checked into a hospital under someone else's name and gave birth has been sentenced to a five year suspended sentence in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Jennifer Nicole Bryan, 21, Blackwell, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty in Kay County District Court to a felony count of falsely impersonating another to create liability.

Bryan was arrested by Ponca City police in December of 2008.

According to police Bryan checked into Ponca City Medical Center on Oct. 11 under the name Laura Hays and gave birth to a baby girl.

An employee of the hospital told police that Bryan produced a social security card with the name Laura Hays on it. The woman could not tell staff her date her of marriage and she gave the wrong birthday.

Dr. Derrick Holmes delivered the baby. On April 18, 2007, Holmes had performed a tubal ligation on Hays. He recognized that the woman in labor was not Hays.

The baby was born and both mom and baby tested positive for Tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC), and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services was contacted.

A DHS worker spoke to the mother and Bryan then admitted her real name.

A birth certificate with the name Asa Kyle Hays had already been obtained.

The baby was placed in the custody of its grandparents.

Officials later learned that Bryan's mother had adopted Bryan's first children.

Bryan also received a five year suspended sentence in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections on a felony drug charge stemming from a 2007 arrest.

Wow. At first I thought it was a matter of trying to assume a father's name. Then I read on and realized she wanted to committ insurance fraud or at least send the bill elsewhere. The kicker was the drugs. At that point any sympathy fell out the window.

The poor baby! The poor grandmother. I think I would make that woman have her tubes tied! I guess some people never do change.

Agree with Sheryl - sad case for many involved including the poor child.
