Georgia's first confirmed case of swine flu is a thirty-year-old woman from Kentucky who shows some signs of improvement, but remains seriously ill in the intensive care unit at West Georgia Medical Center. A physician from the hospital said their challenges included keeping her alive and keeping her illness contained. Only a limited number of staff personnel are allowed in her room, and everyone in the hospital must wear a protective mask.

The patient recently traveled to Cancun, returned to her home in Kentucky, and then traveled to Georgia to attend a wedding. She first attributed her fever and chills to a sunburn, but later went to the hospital to seek medical assistance.

A total of 48 people in Georgia have been tested for swine flu. So far, 23 tested negative, one tested positive, and 24 tests are still pending. The Division of public health is notifying people who may have come into contact with the ill woman, including those on her return flight from Mexico. Her immediate family tested negative for the virus.

The CDC says there is no "magic bullet" for treating the virus, and anyone who has symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms in kids include fever and bluish skin. Shortness of breath, dizziness and vomiting are often seen in adults who have the virus.

Other recent swine flu news:Grady Hospital has an entire respiratory unit that could house swine flu patients, and is currently using a tool that can screen visitors for fever.

Cherokee County schools sent a letter home to all parents, and all schools are keeping a running log of kids who get any type of flu.

The school systems cannot make the decision to close. State health officials will be charged with this task, if necessary.
