Women Can Change the World

Let's Hear it for the Ladies!

Michele Starkey
There is an undeniable fact - women are leading all over the world except in the United States. You can take a look at some of the most influential women in the world here.

From Argentina to Liberia, Antigua and Barbuda to Bosnia, there are women in Presidential positions who are making positive changes in the world.

We need only to look to Liberia to witness what one woman can do.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf recently brought together two widows from opposing families of the Liberian conflict: Quiwonkpa and Doe.

The two widows, Nancy Doe and Tarlor Quiwonkpa, are representatives of the families that are labeled "the most feuding families the Liberian conflict has ever produced."
What is truly amazing is that both of these women blame the current President for the fate of their families and the deaths of their husbands.

Yet, when President Sirleaft extended an invitation to the women to reconcile their differences for the betterment of the Liberian people and "work together for the growth and development of the country," they agreed to come to the Executive Mansion and form a pact with the President.

Imagine that, after decades of bitter accusations, one woman extends her hand and the others join forces with her. That's what women can do - they can reach out, cast aside differences and seek the answers for the good of all people. It's a part of the female DNA - we just hate to hold a grudge or allow it to sever the family or, in this case, the country.

There is more good news for the Liberian ladies. For the first time in decades, there are girls in the Bopolu Central High School this year. Vice Principal, John V. Lombeh, has stated, "I'm telling you that a single female has not graduated from this school since the 14-year civil war that ended in 2003."

Liberia is advertising a promotional campaign with jingles such as, "When you educate a woman, you educate an entire nation."

President Sirleaft is a prime example of how one woman can be a positive change for the world.
