Some days, everything seems to spiral out of control. Your boss is breathing down your neck for a report that is past due, you feel guilty for missing your son's soccer game, you feel bloated and your pants are tight, and you just want to go to sleep. Many women experience these days, but they are able to bounce back and have a fabulous day ahead of them. Unfortunately there are also women that feel low day after day, week after week. Their emotions snowball into feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and sadness - and ultimately into depression.
What is Depression
Doctors feel that depression is brought on by a variety of reasons - genetics, body chemistry, life changes, internal anger, illness, and/or drug or alcohol abuse. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is one of the most common mental problems for women, affecting them twice as often as men. Over 12 million women in the United States are diagnosed with depression every year.
Types of Depression
There are several types of depression that can effect women, including:
- Major Depression is an illness that can impair the subject's ability to function in social settings. This form of depression is profound and relatively constant throughout her life.
- Postpartum Depression is a form of depression that arrives after giving birth. It can be caused by a number of physical, psychological and social factors including postpartum hormone levels and sleep deprivation.
- Premenstrual Symptoms/Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a form of depression that arrives prior to, and during, your menstruation. Many women who suffer from PMDD feel suicidal and suffer bouts of extreme depression.
- Bipolar Disorder is categorized by extreme periods of highs and lows, dramatic mood swings, and changes in behavior.
- Dysthymia is a chronic form of depression that lasts for at least two years.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder appears to be linked to the seasons - typically lasting from fall until spring.
Dealing with Depression
If you feel that you are suffering from slight depression, you may be able to deal with it yourself.
- Seek Support. Spend time with your family and friends, explaining to them your sadness and anxiety. Ask for help and support during this time.
- Exercise. Exercise can increase your body chemicals and promote self-esteem. Try incorporating an exercise routine into your schedule.
- Get Rest. Make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep at night, preferably uninterrupted. Exhaustion will only further depression.
- Take Baby Steps. If you find that the big picture is too overwhelming, try breaking up any tasks and projects into smaller steps. Make sure to congratulate yourself after each achievement.
Seeking Professional help
If you are unable to release your feelings of anxiety and depression on your own, it is best to seek professional help. You will typically receive a combination of psychotherapy and/or anti-depressant medication.
