Women Forced to Wear Skirts

New Dress Code for Badminton

Michele Starkey
It appears there is unrest brewing in another part of the world. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new dress code involving of all things - women and skirts.

The BWF ruling was originally scheduled to be implemented in May but has been postponed for one month to give the female players additional time to settle in with the new "skirt rule." Of course they will still be able to wear their shorts underneath of the skirts so long as they are not visible to the public.

Badminton players have protested the new rule saying that skirts restrict their movements on the badminton courts. Some players like India's most successful doubles player Jwala Gutta and her doubles partner Ashwini Ponnappa actually prefer the skirt but agree that it should be a preference and not a restrictive rule.

Up until now, aside from figure skating, tennis is the only professional sport where women regularly wear skirts. Although the Wimbledon Web site indicates the following in their dress FAQs,
"Players' dress is predominantly white ('almost entirely white')." There is no mention of skirts although most do wear them. It makes you wonder why all the fuss from the BWF's latest ruling?

I admit that I do not skate, play tennis or badminton but if I did, I believe it would be comfortable to don a skirt. Or a skort, remember those? I wonder if there is a ruling against them?

According to a Daily Mall Reporter in the UK, Jennifer Love Hewitt donned a bikini and a pair of wedge heels to play tennis with her boyfriend in Hawaii back in 2009. You can see her here.
Thankfully, Hewitt's dress code never caught on - I haven't worn a bikini in years!

So, whether or not the backlash on the skirt rule causes an uproar in the Badminton World and has a negative effect on the amount of women taking up the sport of badminton remains to be seen.

As for me, I haven't worn a skirt in years. Then again, it's been years since I played any badminton.

Is there a Serena Williams of badminton? She could work this out.

I haven't worn a skirt in years either :) I think some sports ought to have a dress code, because that is all part of the sport. Although I am not a fan of cricket, it used to be played with a white shirt, and cream sweater and trousers/pants. Now teams wear all kinds of colors, advertising companies, the same as many other sports, and it just looks wrong.

What next? Seems there are a lot more important things than wearing skirts to play badminton, but what do I know? I personally love skirts in the summer, I think they are cooler than shorts or capris!

Rules are rules. They can wear hot pants under them or a skort.

Why not just let them wear a skirt or shorts - their option? Seems silly to dictate over such a minor matter. rcj

rules can get in the way, can't they?
