Women and Hair Loss - What They Can Do About It

Regina Paul
Women's hair loss is different from men's in that it can be linked to serious medical problems. Another way that it is different from men's is that it can occur all over the body, and not just on top of the head. Because of this hair loss can be a more serious problem for women than men.

Another thing to keep in mind about women's hair loss is that it can strike women at any age, so this is not a condition that is only for the elderly. No matter what age a woman is at if she notices drastic hair loss anywhere on her body it is something to be taken seriously.

One reason women can suffer from hair loss is related to the hormone testosterone. When a woman has too much testosterone in her system it can cause hair loss. Even though women have small amounts in their system, an amount that tips over past the normal amount can cause hair loss. Other causes can be having a thyroid which isn't working properly, problems with a woman's immune system, and other medical conditions which involve hormones.

If a woman is suffering from hair loss, or notices that she is beginning to have some hair loss, then she should see her doctor. Because there are a number of serious medical conditions which can cause a woman to begin losing hair, it is really important for her to take hair loss seriously and see a medical professional if she thinks she is suffering from hair loss.

Once a serious medical condition has been ruled out by a doctor, there are several options for a woman suffering from hair loss to investigate. Many women suffering from hair loss choose hair replacement as a way to solve the problem. Others choose to take a drug that is a DHT blocker which keeps the testosterone in their bodies from switching over to DHT and as a result affecting their hair follicles. There is also the option of using a treatment on the scalp which causes the hair to appear thicker than it actually is. Some women choose to have their doctor inject steroids into their scalp, which while not affecting the hormones causing the hair loss work instead in spite of them to grow hair. Finally there are laser treatments which can also make the hair to appear to be thicker, and a final advantage, at least for some is that the laser treatments are approved by the FDA.

These are only a few treatment possibilities, there are of course others. To be absolutely certain the treatment you choose is right for you, you should always consult with your doctor to rule out and serious medical issues first. Often when the cause is a medical issue, treating the problem solves the issue of the woman's hair loss.
