Women Over Fifty Are a Whole New Hot Thing Now, They're Cougars

Anyone Remember How Grandmas Used to Look?

Susan Antonelli
Women over fifty, what do they call them now? Cougars? Recently there was a show on television regarding dating. The group of older women were called Cougars. They were sexy, hot Mommas. I am in my sixties and I can clearly remember my wonderful Grandmothers. They wore Orthopoedic shoes, polka dotted dresses and had their hair in buns. No kidding! They wore hats with veils, gloves, dresses at all times no matter what the weather. Even when Kathryn Hepburn introduced pants only one of my Grandmothers ever wore pants and only very, very late in life, her nineties.

How are the Grandmothers of today to know what to wear? How to do their make up and hair? Nobody I know looks anything like the Grandmother's of old. It's almost sad. Children won't know the warm, fuzzy, cushy Grandma in the kitchen apron or house dress. She's not in the kitchen anymore, if she is she's wearing a Yoga suit and according to Two and A Half Men she's hot to trot.

I do think there are still some rules and regulations that should be kept in mind once you're up there in years. I think there is some sort of dress code that one should consider when shopping when you're older. Short shorts are most unattractive even if your legs are still in good shape. The same goes for very short skirts or dresses. Low decolettage necklines on an older wrinkled chest squeams me out . Even if it's not too wrinkled it just is unattractive when your face screams 50 plus. I've seen a great looking woman go by, super figure, cute little short dress and then she turns around and her face looks like a granny apple doll. You don't want your face to clash with your hair and outfit. When shopping, even if you're petite, try to stay out of the Junior department or at least give yourself a good hard long look and say "How old am I?"

You can still wear jeans but not the low rise style. A dark wash, straight leg is best. Put this with a simple white t shirt and a classic blazer and you have a now look . Dresses and skirts are wonderful but definately better at or below your knee. Capri pants are a great way to be cool and comfortable in the summer and avoid shorts. Shorts can be a longer waking short length. At the beach a one piece bathing suit, no string bikini's unless you live in Europe then you can go to the beach in the buff if you're so inclined no matter what your age. A one piece is much more flattering to most figures and certainly much more age appropriate for Granny.

I check out Barbara Walters on her show the View. I think she dresses very well, as does Martha Stewart. They are both very attractive women, dressed appropriately .

Make up and hair color are another area. That bright red lipstick can either make you look alive or frightening. Bright red will make your teeth look yellowed so be sure you have nivce white teeth if you want to wear that color. Easy on the eyeliner, mascara. Brown would be much more attractive than black at this stage. Natural earth tone eyeshadow works best. Very few people can wear blues and greens without looking like Halloween is here again. Keep in mind most of us have less than the best eyesight now. Get a good make up mirror, good lights and those granny glasses when you're putting on your face. Cream foundation is better for older dry skin and cream blush. A bit of white highlighter dotted at the corners of your eyes brighten and help enlarge the look of your eye. Ginger Rogers was a beautiful young woman but a very scary broad when she got old. She never changed her platinum blonde "do" or her stage make up. Baby Jane is not a good look.

Some older women can wear their hair long even when they are older. For some women it's almost an artsy look. I don't think most women can carry it off. Have a long conversation with your hair dresser and perhaps your son or daughter. They'll be honest with you.

Another aspect is being overtly sexual. I'm a fan of Paula Dean or was. Now she has Paula Dean's Party and she's full of sexual innuendo. It's extremely unnattractive and inappropriate for someone her age to be making sexy remarks to all the young guys in her audience. I no longer watch her. I imagine if you're at the Nursing home and you want to be provocative who cares but I prefer elegant to tawdry.

So, basically, keep in mind no matter how young you feel the mirror doesn't lie and you don't want to frighten the general public when you go out..

True! Very true... I'm 51, people tell me I look 36 or 37, I think them; but I'm not foolingmyself. You don't have to be in young women fashion to turn young men or older men heads. Sexy is sexy at any age. Be proud of who you are.

Um, I'm inclined to think you need to lighten up a bit. I'm 47 and am not about to cut all my hair off into a sexless, mannish do because I turn fifty. My long hair is gorgeous, and it's going to stay that way, grey or not. And I do wear low-rise jeans, because I actually look good in them. A white t shirt and blazer? B-o-r-i-n-g! I think you need to know what you look and feel good in, period. Regardless of trends, regardless of your age. Know thyself. Have fun. You can be a wonderful, dazzling, nurturing, sexy grandma. Yes, you hear right. "Sexy" and "Grandma" in the same sentence. Dress like Barbara Walters? Martha Stewart? I'm nothing like them. It's quite possible to be elegant and sexy simultaneously. Good taste doesn't have to mean staid and sterile.
