Not all sexual encounters are worth writing home about, but there are some women who state that regardless of the quality of the sex, they feel the blues afterward. In fact, up to one-third of women report some depression after sex. On a regular basis, about 10 percent of women experience post-sex depression.
Why Do Some Women Feel this Way?
It was determined that a lack of connection with their sexual partners was not the reason for depression following sex. These women feel that the level of intimacy and love run high actually. These women also did not seem to have any issues with sexual dysfunction. They are all relatively healthy and did not have issues with orgasm. It is thought that a biological predisposition may be at play. This will have to be further researched to determine if there is any truth to it.
What Do These Women Experience?
Just like any other depression, the experience was different from woman to woman. Some of the most reported feelings were sadness, regret, anxiety and irritability. Some women experience a host of these feelings. The depression starts immediately following sex and can last for a minutes or several hours.
What Can a Woman Do to Overcome Post-Sex Depression?
Unfortunately, there is no prescribed course of treatment for this. Until researchers know exactly what is causing it, it will be difficult to develop an exact course of treatment. However, all is certainly not lost and women do not have to live this way.
Right now, women experiencing this should consider talking to a therapist. There could be a reason - perhaps one that is deep down - causing this to manifest itself. It may not even have anything to do with your current partner. The study suggests that the partner is generally not the issue.
Now, there could be times when the relationship is the issue. One study does not speak for all women. Some therapists suggest that if a women does not feel equal in her relationship, such issues, such as feeling depressed after sex, could possibly crop up.
It is about getting to the root of the problem and figuring out why you are feeling this way. Depression is not all in your head. It is very real regardless of how and when it occurs. Depression is also generally very treatable. So, if you are experiencing post-sex depression it is very important that you talk to your doctor and/or therapist so that they can help you.
