One of my ex-boyfriends just couldn't understand why I didn't like to be left in the room alone with his sisters. I guess he just assumed that because we were all around the same age we would instantly click. After all, that's how it is for guys. All they need is a couple of beers and a TV and they are best friends from the first meeting.

But guys don't seem to understand the strange undercurrent that exists within female to female relationships. Even women who are best friends have tensions that they probably will never admit to each other's faces. Female relationships are rife with jealousy, competitiveness, quick judgments, and gossip. It is probably something that is instinctual, just like a strong female lion protecting her territory. Here are a few things that men need to understand about women relations and how we deal with each other.

We Instantly Know If We Like Another Woman

When a woman meets another woman, it doesn't take hours for us to decide if we like each other. The decision comes instantly, sometimes just on sight. True, it's not fair, and many women have judged other females prematurely, only to later become the best of friends. But regardless, we women do make swift judgments of whether we like another female we have just met.

So don't be surprised if your woman doesn't click instantly with your mom, aunts, or sisters. It could be something real, or it could just be that mother lion instinct kicking in with your female relatives, trying to keep this new woman from intruding on their territory. You have to give it time.

We Can Sense Tension

Another truism about women that most men don't realize is that we have an inner instinct that tells us when there is tension or dislike from another woman in the room. We are very tapped into how other women feel based on their actions or words because after all we are women too, and we know how we can be!

You might think that your woman is silly when she says that she doesn't think your aunt or mother likes her, but trust her, she knows. It's almost like a strong vibe that gets passed between women. Don't discount her feelings.

A Smile Says a Thousand Words

Most women can tell another woman's true thoughts by her smile. Sounds crazy, but it's true. Ladies, you probably know what I'm talking about. A tight lipped, forced smile is an instant indication that the other woman is struggling to deal with your presence. She wishes you would just leave already. A smirk from another woman tells you that the woman is laughing at you in her head, and she wants you to know it. Maybe she's thinking your shoes are the wrong color for your dress or that your hair is just a mess. She knows that this smile will make you insecure and start to look at yourself twice, which further amuses her. Finally, a woman who genuinely likes you will give you a wide toothy smile, and the smile will come through her eyes. There is no mistaking it when another woman likes you, it's written all over her face.

So fellas, please don't assume that your woman will automatically get along with your female relatives and friends. It takes a lot of time for women to get comfortable around each other. This is a complicated process that you simply can't fathom.
