Women of Revolution: Swift, Beyonce Win Big at Grammys

Singers Combine for Ten Awards

William Browning
Taylor Swift and Beyonce ruled the night of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles as music's biggest night tried to prove their industry was still viable. While not anything groundbreaking in the big winners as Swift and Beyonce were two of the industry's best sellers in 2009, the Grammy Awards do know how to put on a show.

In an era were singles can be downloaded for 99 cents instead of entire albums being purchased, the music industry breathed sighs of relief when fans flocked to the likes of Taylor Swift and bought her album in copious amounts. Fearless, and Beyonce's I Am Sasha Fierce, both have garnered a lion's share of attention from consumers.

Can they sustain the momentum? Swift is about to embark on a tour and Beyonce will be in South America in the month of February. Both songstresses will have many more albums and songs to write. Perhaps their viability comes from singing their own material. I've always been a fan of writers who are able to both write and perform their own songs because not only do they sing it from personal experience, but also that their voice changes over time.

Sting and Seal are both artists I appreciate greatly since as they grew older, their songs and voices matured along with them. Gone are both of their high-strung ballads of the first albums they produced and now their music includes more subtle and older tones that span generations of fans. When Swift and Beyonce both mature, they will surely still have hit songs as their songs will speak to a wider swath of humanity. Imagine how both ladies will sing songs about their husbands, kids, parents, and heartaches from a more mature perspective with more life experience under their belts.

Perhaps that is why both singers did well at the Grammys and in their balance sheets for the record companies. Their songs are impassioned pleas that resonate with the hearts of girls and women in the United States as both innocent and empowering ballads of love and what it means to be in love. Standing up and being noticed in relationships is something that all people can relate to, not just women, and maybe some aspects of cultural renewal are happening in music with these two powerhouses that will have many hits to come. What did the combined ten Grammys of Beyonce and Taylor Swift mean? Get ready for more steadfast women and girls everywhere.
