Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Everyone should take a multivitamin on a daily basis. They make them for specific people too, like children's, men's, women's and 50+. The only reason you wouldn't be in need of a multivitamin is if you eat everything that the food pyramid suggests you eat, and nothing that it doesn't. We know that there is most likely not even one person out there that exactly follows the USDA's food recommendations, on a daily basis, for their whole lives. So, because of this we should start each day out right. But, a multivitamin may not be enough for some of us. Here are some recommendations, for women, on other vitamins you may want to add to your medicine cabinet. Included is why you need them and how much you should be taking.

If you suffer from colds, or cold season is upon you, then you should add vitamin E into your daily regimen. 200 IU of this antioxidant are said to cult the chance of get a cold up to 20%. That might seem like a small amount, but it will also help your skin look healthy and beautiful too. Regular recommendation for vitamin E is only about 30 IU a day. You can get vitamin E without a pill by eating some salad dressing, almonds and even spinach.

Stressed? Try vitamin C. At least 120 mg a day will help you feel less stressed and it will even level out your blood pressure and cortisol levels (that stress hormone that makes us fat around the middle). For a perfect dose of vitamin C just grab a glass of fresh orange juice. One glass is enough to get your through the day!

If breast cancer runs in your family, or you have any worry about developing this awful disease, you can help with prevention by taking vitamin D. 800 to 1,000 IU a day is the general recommendation for this vitamin that is normally just recommended for bone health. The recommendation, however, for bone health is about half that recommended in cancer prevention.

If you find yourself run ragged and tired try a vitamin B complex, and some iron. Anemia could be the cause of your fatigue and just 18 mg a day of iron can help. Vitamin B complex with help perk you back up and is great for your nervous system. This means it can help you combat anxiety and depression too. Good natural sources of B vitamins are bananas, tuna, whole grains and even turkey!
