1950 - The popular style in this period was the 'bouffant' which is when the hair is piled on the head and hanging down on the sides. Also popular was the 'beehive' which we all know! It is an elaborately teased and lacquered version of the 'big hair' style. Audrey Hepburn was known for this style in 'Breakfast at Tiffanys.' This style is no longer popular but that doesn't mean you won't see someone sporting it!
1960 - The revolutionary style of the 60's was Vidal Sassoon who introduced the 5-point, asymmetric, geometric and the ever popular 'bob cut.' The bob was very popular with young women and is still one of the most prevailing haircuts. You can easily do this style yourself or ask your hairstylist to do it for you. Find a picture of a bob cut that you like and show it to your stylist.
1980 - Hairstyles in this era were mostly large. The decade began with the Purdey cult hair cut. This cut was a version of a slick bob with a definitive back neckline contour. Princess Diana wore this hairstyle at her engagement. Basically 'big hair' was the style. Even people with short hair had big hair. Some people to do this day still style their hair this way. If you prefer this style, you can easily do it yourself or you can have your stylist do it for you.
1990 - Just about every style was acceptable during the 90's. Hair styles were constantly changing so this made it easier for them to become more acceptable. As most of us know, Jennifer Aniston's character in 'Friends', her hair was called the 'Rachel' cut. This was a popular fad in the 90's. Long and sleek hair with longer length layers, a fringe and highlights framing the face. Long and sleek hair was not the only popular style. Short and choppy styles such as Meg Ryan's were also very popular. Messed-up hair or as some of us call it 'bed head' was also popular. Blonde became a big favorite for many people whether it was highlights, all over blonde, dirty blonde, etc. Some of these styles are still worn today.
2000 - Now - In 2000 women started wearing more casual styles. The style you could easily fix up or just comb through and still look like you walked out of the salon. Since this time the styles have made steady progression forward. Nowadays there are so many different styles. From the Mohawk, the mullet (yes, even still), and the ever popular bob to the layered, permed, and colored style. Coloring of the hair has become very popular everywhere.
Whatever your style may be, remember you can recreate any style you want. All you need is a picture of the style and you can try it yourself or have your stylist do it. Yes, they may look at you funny, but if it makes you feel good, then do it!
