Being a woman is great but being a woman of substance and knowledge is even better. For one, it lasts longer than outer beauty and knowledge can be used to give back to the community. Here is a short but diverse list of women-related events and opportunities in and around Los Angeles.

Mujeres de Paz Annual Awards Dinner: Celebrating the Spirit of Courage and Resilience, sponsored by the East L.A. Women's Center - On Friday, March 25, the celebration of individuals that donate their time and service as a way of improving the lives of women and families in crisis will be honored. There will also be a special appearance by actress and ELAWC spokesperson Constance Marie. At Luminiarias restaurant in Monterey Park, starting at 6:00 p.m. Seats are $75 per person and advertising opportunities start at $25. For more information, contact Diane Alarcon at 323.526.5819.

Up and Over: Effective Ways to Climb the Maternal Wall presented by the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles - On Thursday, March 10, a discussion by a panel of female attorneys will cover gender bias in the workplace is the topic as well as conflict resolution. Skadden in downtown L.A. Free to law students, $10 for member and $25 for non-members; includes breakfast. For more information, call the WLALA office at 213.892.8982.

The Downtown Women's Center offers a number of ongoing volunteer and internship opportunities to work proactively with disadvantaged women in a residential setting. All educational backgrounds are welcome and scheduling is flexible for those who work or attend school. One-time opportunities are available as well. Training sessions are held throughout the year. Celebration of Women's Month will be sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles on Saturday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. Program will feature guest speaker, Mitzi March Mogul, historian and Historic Preservation Consultant specializing in the architecture and social history of the 19 th and 20 th centuries along with a presentation highlighting the journey of women in modern times. Origins: How Nine Months Before Birth Shape the Rest of our Lives, a discussion between science journalist Annie Murphy Paul and Dr. Michael Lu, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCLA will be held at the Mark Taper Auditorium/Central Library in Downtown L.A. on Tuesday, March 15. Covered will be ideas of how the human mind is formed pre-birth. Free but reservations are highly recommended. For tickets and more information, visit lapl.org.
