Wonder Woman Makeover - Gone is the Star Spangled Bathing Suit

Gone Too is Her Idyllic Upbringing on Paradise Island

After seven decades fighting crime in her star spangled bathing suit and stiletto heeled knee length boots, Wonder Woman has received a new, more modern, outfit-one where she doesn't need to continually reef up her bustier, while dodging bullets. Check the end of this article for a link to a slideshow of Wonder Woman's outfits over her 69 year history.

The new look was designed by artist Jim Lee, known also for the X-Men. Not only does Wonder Woman get covered up, but the blatant American flag patriotism is toned down a bit. There are still stars, but not quite as obvious, which gives the Wonder Woman character a tougher, more subtle look.

From Issue 600 of the Wonder Woman DC Comic, Wonder Woman will be sporting her new look. There will be less skin showing, while she fights crime, but Wonder Woman's new outfit is still sexy. Figure hugging leggings, a low heeled boot, a biker jacket with shoulder pads and a bustier that provides more support for Wonder Woman's assets, look eminently more suitable for fighting crime.

When asked by abcnews.com about Wonder Woman's new wardrobe, Lynda Carter who played Wonder Woman in the 70's television series, agreed the new look was very sexy. You do have to question, though, if Lynda Carter would have been interviewed today, if the 1970's television version of the character had shown less skin. Most of the 1970's television show's appeal had to have been seeing Lynda Carter's now famous curves squeezed into that star spangled bathing suit.

But Wonder Woman's makeover isn't confined to her wardrobe. New, also, is Wonder Woman's back-story, penned by J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski also created the Babylon 5 TV series. No longer was Princess Diana born and raised on idyllic Paradise Island. Instead she was rescued as an infant from her destroyed home.

This back story change should also give the characters personality a little more edge and complexity, more fitting to modern story telling where the lines between good and evil are a little more blurred. The comic book modernization of the super heroine sets the stage nicely for a big screen remake of Wonder Woman, assuming that the recent changes are favorably received by fans.

At the very least, there is likely a bevy of beautiful actresses, rumored to be up for Wonder Woman role in the Warner Bros. movie glad for the cover up. An ensemble comprising leggings and biker jacket sounds a lot more forgiving than a bustier bathing suit.

For all of the changes however, some things do stay the same-bullet repelling bracelets (now stylized gloves) and the lasso of truth still form part of Wonder Woman's crime fighting kit.
