Wonderful Alice in Wonderland

I went to see Alice in Wonderland at the Imax Theater in 3D yesterday. It was the first time I had ever been to a 3D movie--Avitar just didn't interest me--and only the second time I had been to an Imax theater. The first time I went to an Imax was in DC a couple of years ago and I saw a documentary about fighter jets. I wasn't that impressed, probably because I'm not really into fighter jets.

When I first saw the ads on television for Alice in Wonderland, I knew I had to go see it. I loved the story as a child, and was dying to see how it would translate to the modern day cimema. In reality, it wasn't the original story, but sort of a sequel. The critics weren't crazy about it--they said it wasn't crazy enough. I have to say I loved it. I loved the story, the characters, the scenery, the costumes, and the 3D effects!

Mia Wasakowska is credible as the 19-year old Alice returning to the land of her childhood dreams, and Johnny Depp is a marvelous Mad Hatter. Crispin Clover is deliciously evil as the Knave of Hearts, and Anne Hathaway is syrupy sweet as the White Queen. The make-up job on Helena Bonham Carter, the Queen of Hearts was fun, right down to her tiny heart-shaped mouth. Matt Lucas was comical as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and you just had to love Stephen Fry as the Chesire Cat.

I don't claim to be a movie critic, but I would have to give the movie kudos for sheer entertainment value! The 3D effects were awesome. I actually ducked when the Queen of Hearts whacked her crocket mallet and sent the little hedgehog flying at me! I would love to go see it again, except that it's so expensive at the Imax. The regular senior fare for movies is $6.50; it was $12.00 for the Imax theater. (Regular admission is $14.00) The film broke the record for Imax for highest sales opening weekend, which had previously been held by Avitar.

When the movie was over, it took a few minutes to get my "land legs" back. It was a strange sensation, but I have read that some people actually get nauseaus from the 3D effects. I wasn't nauseous, but I did feel a little wobbly for a few minutes. The movie is rated PG because of some scary scenes, but I suspect it wouldn't be a problem for most 8 to 10 year olds. Parents need to consider how much their kids are affected by movies. My 5 year old granddaugher would probably have nightmares; but I suspect my almost 8 year old grandson and his 9 year old cousin would love it.
