Wonderful Relief for Wisdom Tooth Pain: True Home Remedies

Shannan L.
There are no predictable ages for when to expect your wisdom teeth to erupt. It's a curious phenomena that occurs in everyone at some time in their lives- some people get their wisdom teeth anywhere from 16 years of age, to as late as in their 30's. Whatever the case may be, most people have reported some degree of discomfort or pain as a direct result of their wisdom teeth erupting. Common symptoms experienced by wisdom teeth pain sufferers include the following:

• Swelling

• Jaw tenderness centered around the wisdom tooth areas

• Difficulty opening the mouth

• Pain

• Difficulty chewing foods

The most obvious solution to wisdom tooth pain is to consult your dental professional so that he/she can recommend the best route for treatment. The public majority end up getting a diagnosis to extract their wisdom teeth, while others are lucky enough to keep their wisdom teeth. Either way it goes, we all want immediate relief from pain. Here are a few remedies that others have found useful for treating their symptoms of pain from wisdom teeth.

For swelling, apply a cold ice pack compress to the area that you are experiencing the pain. To avoid freezer burn, wrap your ice pack in a paper towel or washcloth to protect your skin from contact. Alternate application of the ice pack in 20 minute intervals- i.e. "20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off... Continue until your ice pack becomes room temperature.

Another natural home remedy to try is to rinse with warm salt water- that's a teaspoon of salt mixed with a cup of warm water. The natural healing properties of the salt, combined with warm temperature water, helps soothe irritated gingival tissue and to flush out bacteria. Do this as often as you need to. Note: This remedy is more effective once the wisdom tooth has broken through the gum tissues.

Gently biting on thick slices of refrigerated or frozen cucumbers can soothe sore and tender gum tissues. The vitamins and minerals in the cucumber slices will absorb into your tissues, which makes the cucumber a soothing remedy.

For pain, take 1 Motrin with 1 Extra Strength Tylenol, every 6-8 hours as needed. Do not exceed 24 hours of use. Although the pain relieving benefits of this combination works within 15 to 20 minutes, it is not intended for long term treatment of pain. If you have allergies to either medication, or any other medical conditions that would contraindicate the use of these medications- DO NOT ATTEMPT IT! Note: Whenever you take any type of pain reliever, you need to take it on a full stomach; otherwise you can risk damage to the kidneys or liver. Also, never consume alcoholic beverages together with any type of pain relief medication. If ever in doubt, consult your health or medical professional.

Clove oil is the natural form of eugenol, which is commonly used for anesthetic as well as antiseptic purposes. A few drops on a piece of gauze or cotton ball, then applied to the source of pain will provide immediate relief. Eugenol is also an essential ingredient in most dental materials. Note: Some people may have an allergic reaction to the eugenol, or the effects of eugenol, so please seek medical attention if you experience any extreme or intense burning sensations. If so, immediately rinse the mouth out with water, and try to remove any lingering residue.

Another natural alternative to clove oil is oregano oil, applied in the same manner- a few drops on a piece of gauze or cotton ball, then applied to the source of pain.

Over the counter oral analgesic gels such as Anbesol and Orabase can provide temporary relief for pain. Just follow the instructions printed on the product label and packaging.

Hopefully this article contains enough information to get you through a good night's rest as well as effective pain relief. Just don't wait too long in seeking permanent pain relief from your nearest dental professional!
