Wonderful Walking Trails in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada

Taking Recreation to a Whole New Level

Drew Bush
Southern Nevada is home to an amazing array of walking trails. What's even better is that you can walk one of these trails and take in some of the beautiful scenery and weather Southern Nevada has to offer. New walking trails are being created every so often around residential areas, allowing people greater access to the great outdoors.

One of the best areas for walking trails is the Wetlands Park in East Las Vegas, Nevada. The Wetlands Park is unique because of its close proximity to urban areas of the Las Vegas Valley. There are miles of trails within the park, some of which are paved and others which are dirt. The most well known trail in the Wetlands Park is called Duck Creek trail. This trail is open for multiple uses, including biking and walking. The trail is approximately two miles in length and it is an easy hike. While walking the trail, one can see numerous plant types and countless bird species. Coyotes, quail, and rabbits are commonly seen along the trail and in the Wetlands Park.

The Wetlands Park and the main entrance to the Duck Creek trail are located on Broadbent Avenue a little more than a mile east of Boulder Highway. Take Boulder Highway to Tropicana and make a right. Go down for about 1.25 miles and Tropicana will turn into Broadbent. The entrance to a dirt parking lot will be on the left.

Henderson, Nevada is just ten miles from the Las Vegas Strip. In addition to the many high end residential areas, shops, and parks are the countless walking trails that snake their way through residential areas. The walking trails in the Henderson area provide access to community and recreation centers, schools, stores, and employment centers. Some of these trails include the Amargosa trail, Boulder Highway trail, Equestrian trail, Mormon Tea Trail, Pittman Wash Trail, River Mountains Loop trail, and the Union Pacific Railroad trail. The Union Pacific Railroad Trail passes really close to Nevada's only state college, Nevada State College. It is a nicely paved, quiet trail that passes really close to residential areas. This trail is currently being extended and will provide even greater access to commercial and residential areas. The Boulder Highway trail, also a paved trail, provides access to numerous fast food restaurants and stores including a Kmart. It is currently 4.6 miles long and will also be extended in the future. Trail use hours are from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The Henderson trails were rated the Best of Las Vegas 2008 by the Las Vegas Review Journal Poll.

If you would like to check out one or more of these trails, maps are available on the Parks and Recreation section of the City of Henderson website.
