Wood Stove Cooking

Recipe for Stew and Bisquits

mooooshine
In this time of economic uncertainty , I have chosen to reduce my consumption of our energy by cooking and heating my home with a small wood or coal burning cookstove. I have not used coal as I don't need to and all of my wood is dead trees that myself or neighbors need to have cut. The wood is even split by hand no energy needed to split it . My kindling is broken dead sumac, and my weekly newspaper makes a good fire starter.

Anyway now for my recipe

Please make sure your cast Iron pan has a tight fitting lid.If you do not have a wood cookstove this recipe can be duplicated in your conventional oven in a cast iron pan with lid.

You will need to have your fire burning for about 1 hour to heat up your cook top (for oven users please set at 350 and preheat)

ingredients

stew meat (or hamburger) 1 pound

potatoes 1 pound

carrots 1 pound

2 stalks of celery

1 winter onion

2 cups of water

2 beef bullion cubes

1 tablespoon of flour

2 cups of bisquit mix

1 cup of milk

salt

pepper

garlic

PUT WATER

BULLION in pan on top of stove with meat to brown

wash and cut veggies into pieces (i leave skin on potatoes for the nutrients that is your choice)

once meat is brown add cut veggies add salt and pepper to taste (garlic if you choose)

put lid on and cook until potatoes and carrots are soft on my stove it takes about 30 minutes

mix flour

bisquit mix

milk

set aside till veggies are soft

once veggies are soft drop bisquit mix on top and recover

in 10 minutes turn bisquits over

recover after 15 minutes take of stove but leave covered for 10 minutes

this is such a hearty and easy stew and bisquits and just think no electric or gas needed

i hope your family loves this as much as mine does

until next time
