Traveling on vacation from the city of Boston to the coast of Maine, I soon discovered that I was off the beaten track. I had just spun through Gloucester and Manchester by The Sea looking at homes, and enjoying the sights of Cape Ann, and the rocky New England Coast. My companion and I were getting hungry, it was lunch hour, and we were on vacation, with really no time table except to check in at the hotel in the Kennebunkport area.
We were traveling along Route 133 and soon started seeing the local restaurants.
Clams. Lobsters . A shellfish lovers paradise!
Then, I saw it. seems now like a dream.
Woodman"s.
Fried clams was what I had in mind for lunch. This would be the place to stop.
Well, the basket of fried clams was delicious. Came with fries. Topped off with the pride of Boston. Samuel Adams Beer.
I couldn't be happier. The clams, the beer, the beer, the clams.
Got so excited, I bought the t-shirt. Grabbed a bumper sticker for my car, too.
I've been back a few times since then. Just last summer, I got semi -lost (again) in Ipswich, the small town to the north of Essex. Worth the drive, we made it back to what I would like to call my New England home. Woodman's.
It's still the same. Only, they added a back patio and a gift shop in the back. The place is always full. Full of locals, travelers, and bus tour groups.
The food is still superb, too, making Forbes magazine to proclaim, "Best Seafood In America".
Yankee Magazine says, "Best Local Food in Massachusetts"
Since 1914, when Chubby and the crew served up the meals, and hopefully for many years to come, the tradition continues with fresh, local food served the only way they know how, excellent!
