Wood's Fest - Pennsylvania's Fall Foliage

Autumn Woods

Rue Cooper
The first cold and brisk fall days bring the smells down from the mountain and call the adventurous into the woods. This poem was inspired by such a rare day.

" Woods Fest "

Into the woods
of the great golden trees,
where a carnival has spread
a confetti of leaves

Autumn calls me
and I answer her song
She has a sweet voice
she draws me along

Past the rusty red berries
where the wood-rose tarries
over acrid ground littered
with wild black cherries

On through spirals of grapevines
that hang from the sky
and curl their wood tendrils
as I pass by

In this secret valley
of Queen Anne's lace
where blue paints the cornflower's
upturned face

The brisk-fading days,
of sun-shadowed haze,
in the ambered-frost fingers
my soul softly lingers
