Woody's 5 Worst NFL Quarterbacks of 2007

Michael Grisso
As the season winds down and the playoff picture is taking shape, but for some there is always next year. We've seen Tom put up video game stats in New England. Peyton deal with offensive injuries and have Indy right there for another Super Bowl. Tony emerge as a premier quarterback in the league with help from T.O. and Jason. Then of course last but certainly not least Brett Favre transforming into a young kid again looking for one more Super Bowl ring in the twilight of his career as he eclipses NFL records left and right.

However many teams looked promising at the beginning of year on paper to make a playoff run only to have injuries, jealousy, and authorities get in the way. While many can say this player or that caused there team to lose face throughout the season we know 5 starting quarterbacks who didn't help when the going got tough and probably hurt their team most. Who's on your list?

#5 Carson Palmer-Cincinnati Bengals: The team as a whole has completely underachieved this year and while Palmer's numbers have morphed others on this list (except for his INT's at 17 ranked first out of the 10 players we researched) he must be placed at the #5 spot for lack of leadership. Unbias as I am living in Cincinnati and rooting for AFC West teams, the press conferences of Palmer and laid back demeanor with players on the field has become tiresome for Cincinnati fans. There was a day when coach Marvin Lewis was stern, but those seemed to have passed and he has rubbed off on Carson in 2007.

All I can say is, if the defense can't hold their own, then use the trio of running backs you have and keep them off the field. Its a little too late now, but we thought we'd throw our two sense in. Sorry Carson, your a nice guy, but we all know where they finish. Better luck next year Bengals.

#4 Chad Pennington-New York Jets: Not sure if Chad ever should have comeback after his first shoulder injury. No one in New York has confidence in him anymore and have all started backing Kellen Clemens. He has no karma with any of the receivers except for Coles, but when he is injured Pennington is a different quarterback. Although completing 67% of his passes he did not throw for 300 yards in a game the entire season, 5 of his 9 touchdown passes were against Miami and Cincinnati (see Carson Palmer), and even with a chance to try to save face against New England (12/16) he threw 38 times for no touchdowns and his longest pass was only 16 yards even though he completed 65.8 % of his passes.

I was one of the ones that had a lot of faith in you coming into the league and before your injury you looked very promising. Unfortunately the only way you may have a shot at coming back to somewhat of what you were is to get out of New York. Somewhere warm where that shoulder isn't going to stiffen up so quick. Miami anyone? Good luck Chad you'll need it.

#3 Donovan McNabb-Philadelphia Eagles: Uh paging Mr. McNabb. How does a quarterback with your mobility get sacked that many times against a New York Giants team that was in shambles at the beginning of the year? I have a feeling that your team isn't behind you like they used to be and although Mr. Reid said your still the man in Philly, it will interesting to see what is offered for you in the off season. We almost for an instance thought you were back in the Eagles 56-21 route of the Lions in Week #3, but evidently it was just a facade. I have to give it to you guys for beating Dallas 10-6, but against a team that gives up a lot of passing yards (which you should of thrown for 300 in both) just shows that you'll need to grab a big receiver in the off season whether the free agent wire or in the draft.

Then again, you may not even be there when its all said and done in 2008.

#2 The Chicago Bears Quarterbacks: Those who shall not be named are simply atrocious. Their passer ratings are horrible (66.4 and 75.6), they've combined for 19 interceptions, neither one averages 7 yards or more a pass, and between them they've combined for 3,214 yards, 14 touchdowns, and about a 57% completion rate. No wonder Mr. Purdue is getting to play. Understanding that the team lost a lot of players on defense early in the season the offense needed to step up, but all they did was go into hibernation.

All I can say is where would they be without Devon Hester? How good is that guy! Maybe next year Cubbies.

#1 Trent Dilfer and Michael Vick: Boy isn't this the oddest of combinations. I wasn't going to place Vick here simply because he didn't play, but because of his troubled ways how could I leave him out. I mean his team is 3-11 as of (12/18), they did try to bring in Leftwich who can't scramble for poo poo, and wannabe Harry Connick Jr. over there is no NFL starting quarterback, period (sorry, Joey. Search your feelings and you will know it to be true). At least if Vick played it would have helped Warrick Dunn and Alge Crumpler have better seasons fantasy wise then they have had (although Crumpler has been injured). Just think though, 23 months, 19 1/2 on good behavior, probably a year suspension from the NFL after you comeback, and then some dire straits 3 and something team will come give you more money so they too can once again become mediocre at 6-10 or 8-8. Truth hurts, but thats just how it is.

Dilfer on the other hand, he is here simply because after researching the entire stats for quarterbacks he won the worst quarterback award 4 times out of the big 6 ratings. 55.1 quarterback rating, 51.6% completion rating, 1,166 passing yards, 5.32 yards per attempt were all last in the group. Then his 7 touchdowns were second to last and interceptions were 3rd to last from the 10 quarterbacks that were researched. We know you were hurt Trent, maybe its time to just call it a career and start coaching. You like you enjoy being on the sidelines with a headset on (See Cincinnati/S.F. highlights after Rich Hill runs in for touchdown). Take your ring and move on.

Other Notables: Due to injuries and quarterbacks coming in and out on the season many were not included into the rankings although we still have 5 more that we researched who missed this list; Cleo Lemon, Kyle Boller, Damon Huard, Mark Bulger, and Joey Harrington. You could also throw in the Oakland QB Crew, and even possibly Vinny and David even though Carolina has more wins then any of these other notables teams do (6-8).

I'm a Falcons fan, so this season has SUCKED. Can't argue with anything you've got, though! A great job!

Hey, you ought to write about the Cleveland Browns season passing expectations. I respect them even though I follow the Steelers . . . dang Jets!

I saw the title then saw Romo in the pic and fell out - when I came here I saw that you said 'it's definitely not these four'- that was a relief - good article!

yea, my brother and I were talking about Eli and Vince because basically their teams have carried them (defense/running) throughout the year. I should have put Vince up here I think at 9 tds and 16 touchdowns if I went back and did it again, but I don't know who I would take off, lol.

Excellent analysis. The stats might not back me up, but I can't stand Eli Manning.

David Carr is AWFUL. Trent Dilfer is definitely the worst QB though, to no surprise. He's always been a guy that just tried to NOT make mistakes and now he's an aging guy with marginal talent (for the NFL).

    Good read Mike.

I had to have my 21 year old son (who speaks footballease) translate for me as I read your article. According to him you are right on! :)
