Word Maze: Poetic Meandering Through Reality

When Words Are More Than Words

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

It is hard to meet someone,
Or so it is often said,
But it is easier to meet someone
Than it is to delete them
From either experience
Or memory
Even long after
They are dead.

It is easier to forget
Than it is to forgive,
Yet many things
We might wish to forget
Stay with us
As long as we live.

Meeting and deleting.
Forgiving and forgetting.
Trying to prevent
And stepping aside
And allowing
What we ascribe to
Nature
To take its course.

Holding on or fleeting.
Recalling proudly or regretting.
Being in control
Or subservient,
An upward climb
Or downward slide
Missed in the vetting
When we tried to foresee
Nurture
Preventing nature
From getting worse.

Responsibility assigned
To those who we have resigned
To take the blame
When our own role
Must remain a secret;
Never falling far from the tree,
Dried up serpents are left to be
Found by skin and
Tax collectors
From the neighboring
Enemy sectors
Commanded by an army of
Hannibal Lectors;
On this the righteous
Of both left and right
Can readily agree
As anyone
With or lacking eyes
Can plainly see.

Though when it comes time
To announce the real mother,
Each one is quite sure
She's the one
Of the other.
