The only way to properly understand Scripture is to ask what the author meant when he wrote it. The goal is to hear the words as the recipients did. Since at least a near two thousand years has passed since the last Scriptures were written, the changing of language poses a threat to our proper understanding. So, the expositor must place a high value on word-study. Since I don't know the original languages, I always compare five English versions of the passage which I'm expositing. So, instead of fifty Scholarly opinions, I have three hundred. Once these versions are closely examined, the sections in which they differ are closely examined using the tracing of the development of the theme, Lexicons, Word-Study books, and finally, Commentaries. I believe, apart from knowing the original languages, this is next to the best method for word-study.
Also, since we convey our meaning by the means of a word, there will be a large value assigned to word-study. If the hearers don't understand the language which we're speaking, and our goal is for their lives to be changed by what they hear, then we'd better place a high value on the types of words we plan on using. The goal is to be simple, so everyone can understand; however, if an unknown word is used, then we had better explain it.
2. Discuss the relative value of the following in word-study: English Dictionary, Concordance, Lexicon, Commentary.
1. English Dictionary-
The value in using an English Dictionary for word-study is in its help of determining the exact meaning of a word in the Bible version which is being studied. Also, more of its value lies in its making sure the expositor has his words in the right place, and he's communicating correct definitions.
2. Concordance-
The value in using a Concordance for word-study is in its help for studying and comparing varied uses of the same word throughout the Bible.
3. Lexicon-
The value in using a Lexicon for word-study is in its help to define specific Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic words. Of course, I'm speaking of those Lexicons written in English.
4. Commentary-
The value in using a Commentary for word-study is in its scholar's research help. Learned men have commented on every single word in Scripture. We can learn more by simply "standing on their shoulders".
