WordPress: Manage Revision

Michael Mann
WordPress is designed to maintain revisions to both posts and pages. Revisions enable you to revert back to a previous version of either a post or page. This can be a handy tool to have. However, each revision is stored along with the current version of the post or page in the database. If you have hundreds or thousands of posts, the potential number of revisions can be huge. This can slow down your site over time. Lucky, there are two useful plugins to help control the number of revisions as well as a clean old revisions.

Revision Control

Revision control is a plugin which works for both WordPress and WordPress Multiple User. Using the revision control plugin, you can set a default for posts/pages. Additionally, this can set per post/page. You are provided with three options: Enabled (with no limit), Disable (keeps none), and Limit to X Revisions (Drop down of 2-14 revisions).

Revision control's default settings are set using Settings > Revision. Download Revision Control.

Delete-Revision

Delete-Revision is a plugin which works for both WordPress and WordPress Multiple User. Using the delete-revision plugin, you can check for "redundant" revisions and remove them, if desired. You are also provided with the ability to optimize the database. These two features can assist in keeping your database clean and purring along for you.

Delete-Revision is usable at Settings > Delete-Revision. Download Delete-Revision.

Installing

Both plugins are installed the same way most plugins are under WordPress or WordPress Multiple User. Download the plugin and extract the compressed file (.zip). This should provide you with a folder containing all of the necessary files. Upload the entire folder to wp-content/plugins folder.

Activate

To activate either or both of these plugins, log in as an Administrator and click Plugins from the left side navigation. This will bring up the list of installed plugins. Click Activate (WordPress or WordPress Multiple User. In WordPress Multiple User, this is for the current blog only) or Activate [plugin-name] Site Wide (if desired) under WordPress Multiple User (Activates for all blogs).
