WordPress sets the default post category to uncategorized and link category to Blog Roll, neither of which are able to be removed without some work. If you wish to remove either or both, follow the directions list.
Change Post/Link Category
Look for Settings (left hand side of the page). Click the downward arrow to the right of Settings and it will drop down a listing of options. Click Writing. For Default Post Category, select the category you wish to set as default.
For Default Link Category (if you wish to change it), select the category you wish to set as default. Click Save Changes.
Remove Unused Post Category
If you wish to remove the old default post category, look for Posts on the left hand side of the page. Click the downward arrow to the right of Posts and it will drop down a listing of options. Click Categories. All except the new default post categories will now display a checkbox in front of it, indicating it can be delete. Hover over the category name and a delete link will appear. Click the delete link. A message box will appear stating:
"You are about to delete this category ' Uncategorized'
'Cancel' to stop, 'OK' to delete."
Click OK. The post category will be deleted and no longer show up on your WordPress Blog.
Remove Unused Link Category
If you wish to remove the old default post category, look for Links on the left hand side of the page. Click the downward arrow to the right of Links and it will drop down a listing of options. Click Link Categories. The previously set default link category Blog Roll will now display a checkbox in front of it, indicating it can be delete. Hover over the category name and a delete link will appear. Click the delete link. A message box will appear stating:
"You are about to delete this category 'Blog Roll'
