Somewhat really early, to my surprise
So I stepped to our balcony for a smoke
In pure wretchedness, I cried and did choke
A man in a wheelchair was waking from the street,
No one around in sight, he picked up his sheet
He started screaming for nobody to hear
This is when I began to choke, and to tear
The man had no legs, he rolled to the trash can
I had no food, no money, and nothing was open
There was nothing I could do, nowhere to buy a bite
Beale Street was empty for it was only the dusky light
Every trash can emptied, he still searched each one
Yelling at the empty air, pure misery and hunger he did own
Never in my life, will I ever take for granted my life
The pain was wretched, a horrible site, the strife
Today, I watched a grown man in starvation cry
And I think I have a right to complain about my life?

Post a CommentI once saw a legless man too. I presume he just came off a bus & saw him rolling along his makeshift roller board. I doubt he was a homeless. He looked decently dressed & strong even without his lower body. So it's not sad. In fact, I think he's heroic & should be respected.
Such a sad reality. I can almost bet that he is a veteran of the military. God bless the disabled homeless
Sad - I know when I worked in downtown I would carry a bag with a peanut butter sandwich and chips with me each day. There was a homeless man by our parking lot - I would leave it for him in the morning. In return one day he chased away a would be thief from my car.
We live in a society that feeds pride and selfishness. It makes me sick when I hear people talk, or I read blogs where people are so resentful of helping the poor, sick and disabled. As long as we have our cushy jobs, weekly paychecks, and our toys, then everybody is happy. Maybe we need to rethink our attitudes, roll up our sleeves, and help our neighbors in any way that we can. We can never know when a life-altering event happens, and we would end up needing help like that poor man. We should stop looking to the government for help because, obviously, government could care less.
Is a shame that our government will not do more for our own countrymen but help other countries, by pouring money into them, our hard earned TAX DOLLARS, which should remain here in America.
