Words that Spell Unhealthy Thinking

Hannah
Many people do not realize that everything a person says, says something about who they are. As well, the words people use frequently can also say something about whether they have healthy or unhealthy thinking. Let's take a look at some of the words that may reveal that a person's thinking may not be as healthy as it could be.

Black and white words are the first of many culprits in the world of unhealthy thinking. What are black and white words? Those are words that are words used to express extreme thinking. Those who often live in a black and white world, are often called anal retentive, perfectionists, and stubborn. Some of the words used often by someone who has black and white thinking are; always, never, only, forever, permanently, unfailingly, constantly, should, must, and this list goes on and on. The point is with these words, and type of thinking there is no room for change or improvement, only the one way all things should be. A person who uses these words often, is not only rigid in their thinking, but overly dramatizes the situation itself, and harshly judges recipients of these words as well. For example, a husband or wife that screams their spouse is always watching football or soap operas. Well, although their spouse may watch quite often, it is quite a bit of an embellishment to say always. These types of people are not only very hard to deal with, as they won't be moved, but they also put a lot of stress on themselves as well as others. How horrible it must be to think and believe something can only be one way, and there is no room for any other possibilities.

Those who continuously use derogatory words. Why is this a problem? Because these people are not only making everything that happens more than it is, they are also expressing it in away that hurts others as well as themselves. What you continuously think about or express eventually happens. Call your wife a nasty name often enough, and you will not only start to see her that way, you will start to internalize, and start believe that is what she is. So, derogatory words, aka bad mouthing someone, may turn out to be one of the most unhealthiest things you can do not only for yourself, but your relationships with others as well. Derogatory words that are commonly used are, stupid, useless, ugly, worthless, retard, ignorant, dumb, crazy, fat, and the list goes on and on. It also includes the whole realm of four letter words as well.

People with overly, negative thinking may be the worst culprits of all. They don't have to worry about failing, because they already have, at least in their mind. These type of people use words like can't, impossible, unavoidable, hopeless, unsolvable, unattainable, futile, unthinkable, and this list as well goes on an on. The point here is these types of people have themselves trapped in a box with no place to go. People like this can often suffer from depression and low self-esteem. In their world everything is already a defeat before even starting.

There you have it words that can spell unhealthy thinking. Next time you are having a conversation with someone listen to the words they use often, you will get a real picture of the type of person you are listening to. This by the way is a great way to tell if someone is datable. If they use a lot of black and white words, derogatory words, or overly negative words, this may be someone you want to stay clear of. A great tool as well for those who are interviewing prospective employees.

Always remember, the words people use are an expression of who they are, and how they think. So, when getting to know someone new, make sure you listen really well to the words they are using, and if those words may be spelling unhealthy thinking.
