Now to Wordsleuth's Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 5:

  1. LSU

LSU is clearly the number one team in the country right now. They narrowly escaped the two weeks of major upsets by coming back on Florida and they remain in great position to play for a national championship in New Orleans in January.

2. California

With two weeks of major upsets, California moves all the way up to number 2 in the rankings. So far California is off to their best start since 1956 and it could all lead to a matchup with LSU for all the marbles.

3. Ohio State

Ohio State's defense has been amazing so far this season. With a lot of question marks entering the season, the defense has really put it together. Holding Purdue to only a few points was impressive, now if the offense can be a little more consistent they will be in the title hunt all year.

4. Oklahoma

Oklahoma is still one of the best teams in the country and they are probably more than regretting their breakdown against Colorado. Oklahoma would be number 2 in the polls, but now they have no room for error if they expect to be in the title game. Beating Texas was a step in the right direction.

5. Boston College

Boston College is still undefeated and they boast one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Matt Ryan. The problem is that BC hasn't really been challenged yet and they will lose at some point this season. The ACC just isn't that good.

6. South Florida

South Florida had its hands full with Florida Atlantic this weekend but they made out with the win. This secures South Florida's number 6 ranking in the polls.

7. South Carolina

South Carolina beat Kentucky this weekend and took control of the SEC. Head ball coach really seems to have turned this team into a power, but some big games still loom on the horizon for the Gamecocks.

8. Oregon

Oregon suffered a heart-breaking loss to California two weeks ago, but they see themselves creep back into the top-10 with the losses of some of the other contenders. Oregon is still a contender for the title, even if they have just an outside chance.

9. USC

Jim Harbaugh took his team to USC this weekend and came out a winner. USC was shocked that they would lose to the Stanford Cardinal, and it might spell an end to their national title chase. They still have an outside shot, but with even bigger games on the horizon it does not look very good.

10. West Virginia

West Virginia finds its way back into the top-10 after the losses of several teams lower than them in the polls. WVU is still feeling the effects of its loss to South Florida, but the Bulls look more and more like a legit team.

11. Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech still hasn't lost since its embarrassing loss to LSU. While Virginia Tech hasn't won pretty, they have still won and an ACC championship could still be in the cards.

12. Missouri

Missouri moves all the way up to 12th in the polls after their latest win. Chase Daniels and the Tigers seem to be rolling right now. This week they have a big matchup with Oklahoma that could help to decide their fate in the Big 12.

13. Arizona State

The Sun Devils have really turned their program around. This time last year they were 3-3 and now this season they are 6-0. The Sun Devil offense has been very good and with some big games on the schedule in the Pac-10, they really can decide their own fate.

14. Florida

Florida has lost two consecutive games and can pretty much count themselves out of a repeat bid. They had LSU right where they wanted to on Saturday but they let the Tigers gain on 4th down twice and that spelled their doom.

15. Wisconsin

Wisconsin found out just how good Illinois is this season when they lost to them on the road. Last season they went down 18 points but fought their way back, this season they did the same, but could not finish the job, eventually losing to the Illini.

16. Hawaii

Colt Brennan and Hawaii are continuing their march towards a BCS game this season, as they remain undefeated. Don't forget that Hawaii is a different team off the island. While I expect them to go undefeated at home, they may have a tough time doing the same on the road.

17. Cincinnati

When the season started who would have figured Cincinnati would be over 10 point favorites when they matched up with Louisville? Well that is the case we find ourselves in now as the Bearcats are undefeated so far and they continue their magical season.

18. Illinois

Illinois is now sitting atop the Big Ten with Ohio State. Ron Zook has really turned this team around, and while they probably have no chance to win the Big Ten outright, their success this season cannot be overlooked.

19. Kentucky

As I stated last week their was no way that Kentucky could beat South Carolina and they would take a nice drop in the polls. Well this week there is no way that they will beat LSU and they will struggle to hold onto their Top 25 ranking.

20. Florida State

Florida State took a drop out of the polls a few weeks ago, but since then they have played pretty good football. They have now found themselves right back in the rankings with their big wins, including one over ranked Alabama.

21. Texas

Texas has now lost two games in a row and they are really struggling. The new news out of Texas is that receiver Sweed is now out for the season with a wrist injury. That certainly won't help turn things around.

22. Auburn

Auburn beat Florida two weeks ago to make them a player once again. After two heart-breaking defeats it looks lie Tommy Tuberville has his team back on track.

23. Tennessee

Tennessee made a real statement by demolishing the Georgia Bulldogs. Tennessee enters the rankings this week at number 23 and Georgia is pushed down to 24. Tennessee might still be a big player in the SEC.

24.Georgia

Georgia drops a lot of spots after the Volunteers destroyed them on Saturday. Georgia had no offense, and their defense could not stop Tennessee from scoring.

25. Purdue

Purdue may have been annihilated by Ohio State, but they are still a very good team. Curtis Painter and the Boilermakers need to rebound fro this loss if they want to stay in the rankings.
